Why does your voice sound so different in recordings?

If you've ever heard your voice played back from a recording, you’ll be familiar with how awkward it is - suddenly everything you say sounds higher and more nasal and just wrong, and you're left questioning: "Do I really sound like that?" Unfortunately, yes, as Hank Green explains in the latest episode of the SciShow. But that doesn't mean that your voice sounds bad in real life, it’s just that you’re so used to hearing it in your head, where it sounds deeper and more resonant. This is because when we talk, we’re not only hearing the sound that comes out of our mouths, travels through the air and hits our inner ears, but also the sound that bounces around in our own, fleshy heads before hitting our inner ear. And all of this bone and muscle in our heads is better at transmitting low frequency vibrations rather than higher tones, so we end up hearing ourselves with a lower voice than we have in real life. But there is good news - just because your real voice sounds weird to you, that doesn't mean it's actually bad. As Robbie Gonzalez from io9 explains, there's research to suggest that other people prefer your recorded voice to the one in your head.

Every time I hear myself on a recording I think to myself "I should NEVER talk again" :D

/am auto excluded due to coming up with this masterful idea.
 
If you don't like how your voice sounds on recordings, you can always take elocution lessons. This will improve your diction and delivery, especially for public speaking. Even 4 or 5 lessons works wonders and gives you more self-confidence

In school you can also join the debating society. That is a "thrown in the deep-end" way of sorting it out

Yeah when I hear my own voice it sounds like Vin Diesel :D ...but with his nuts in a vice :o

Not me! :D

Mind you I record every meeting I attend with my phone because of my terribly short attention span. Listening to myself in those recordings is torture! :D

I sound like a cross between Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. Unfortunately, other people think so too....someone my husband knows told him that he thinks he had spoken to me before on the phone, but wasnt sure, and my dear husband asked "Did she have a Mickey Mouse voice? Then that's her". :mad:
 
My voice sounds deeper to me... Big difference in being in front of the camera or behind it too. Behind it I sound like an ogre.
 
This thread is useless without voice recordings :p

I didn't know I sounded exactly like my sister until I heard my recorded voice. Explains why my mother always gets confused on the phone.
 
I hate the sound of my recorded voice.

But I love listening to the sound of my own voice when I'm speaking to other people. I love reading out loud as well.

:D yeah that's what I thought. Still a great idea though, definitely gonna start doing that but also purely to cover my attention span ...or complete lack thereof :o

Your question earlier made me read up on the legality of recording conversations - and I assume byt extension, meetings.

You are allowed to record the conversation only if you're party thereto: "Any person, other than a law enforcement officer, may intercept any communication if he or she is a party to the communication". from here.

I suspect that I won't be able to use my recordings in court, however, as I'd then need to have informed them beforehand. Not that I'd want to do that :D
