Why even worry about protecting your private data online?

Facebook landed in hot water recently following reports that data from the service was harvested by third parties.

Political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica was accused of using the data while working on Donald Trump’s campaign to become US President.

Would you be willing to be compensated for your personal information? This is the challenge of a French startup called My Data is Rich. As Le Parisien reports, the company wants to use its consent to sell the personal information of its contributors. Data containing all kinds of information, from age to socio-professional category, number of children, sex, type of vehicle or marital status. A market for eternal expansion, which weighed "1.4 million euros in 2014" and "much more today", explains Parisien Eric Zeyl, founder of the start-ups. In the full Cambridge Analytica scandal, the protection of personal data is becoming increasingly important. On 25 May, the European Union enact the general regulation on the protection of personal data, which gives the consumer more rights. To respond to potential criticism, Eric Zeyl promises that these data will be anonymised and secured before they are sold: "Anyone can provide this or that type of data, but the more he delivers, the more likely he is wins money, "he says.

My data is Rich even suggests using your car's data by purchasing a case that plugs into the vehicle's cigarette lighter. GPS position, acceleration, temperature, data that are "of great value" to the founder. "An advertiser has a great interest in knowing who passes where, and at what time, and the communities could even find out where the potholes are on the streets," he says. Le Parisien indicates that this unit can drive between 4 and 10 euros per month for a motorist per hour.

How can you be sure that the data will be protected? The start-up claims that they will continue to be hosted in France and that each contributor must sign a terminable contract at any time. The sums involved will be paid to them in the form of commercial and commercial profits once the base of 35 euros has been reached, Le Parisien .
