The main headline from the German election yesterday is not Angela Merkel getting a fourth term in charge, but rather her party's weakened position - caused chiefly by a surge in support for the right wing nationalist party 'Alternative für Deutschland' (AfD).

The AfD is a controversial party - one which not only ran on a program of anti-immigration and anti-Muslim policies, but one which is at least in part represented by people who have expressed racist and xenophobic views.

Nevertheless, provisional results indicate that the party has received 12.6 percent of the total vote, making it the third strongest in the country.

Why then did this happen? As Statista's Martin Armstrong shows in the infographic below, AfD voters were primarily motivated by fears of terrorism, fears of crime and dissatisfaction with the influx of asylum seekers into Germany since the 2015 crisis.

So, racist xenophobes according to SJW logic and globalists...

The lefties farked up the world, the right is pushing back. It's actually amazing to watch the shift happening right in front of our eyes. It's like watching evolution but at a much faster pace. I'm confident the world will she a complete shift from left to right in the next 30 or so years.

Does this shocking result mean that AfD is going to be the third force in German politics in the future? There are many reasons to doubt this.

First of all, the poll showed that a stunning 60% of AfD voters voted “against all other parties” and only 34% voted out of conviction for AfD. This is in sharp contrast to voters of all other parties. More than 70% said that it would be good if you could vote for CSU outside Bavaria – CSU is a much more conservative and rightwing party than Merkel’s CDU, but only contests election in the southern state – while 86% think that the party does not distance itself enough from “extreme right positions”.

In short, the relationship between AfD and its voters is weak, and is mostly defined by opposition to other parties rather than by support for AfD itself. And beyond its own voters, AfD still seems highly controversial. Only 12% of all Germans were “satisfied with the political work” of Alice Weidel, the co-leader of AfD, with Alexander Gauland. This was by far the lowest of all party leaders; even significantly lower than the 44% for the highly controversial Sahra Wagenknecht, deputy chairwoman of the radical left Die Linke.

You mean from Right to Left, to Right again. Since Zero Hedge is so fond of Tyler Durden, anti-economy and establishment, here is a quote from V for Vendetta on the effects of thinking with fear:

And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame?

Well, certainly, there are those who are more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable. But again, truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

I know why you did it. I know you were afraid. Who wouldn't be? War, terror, disease. They were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense. Fear got the best of you, and in your panic, you turned to the now high chancellor[...]. He promised you order, he promised you peace, and all he demanded in return was your silent, obedient consent.

Just remember that there are bad guys on both the left and the right, the only tool bad men have of getting your vote is fear

I get that.

My biggest issue is the right majority in SA would mean use whities will be the Jews in Germany. There is a definite shift and I think the Muslim assault on Europe has the biggest claim to the shift. But the Right thing is going to spread like Communism did. You can quote me on this in 30 years :p

If its anything like UKIP, they could lose all their seats at the next election

UKIP achieved its purpose. But yes, it's obvious from the stats in the OP that AfD is getting protest votes. The question is, are the other parties going to wake up and smell the coffee regarding what's being left out of the mainstream political dialogue?

And it'll eventually swing back because it'll get too radical. Swinging too far in either direction is never good. People need to know that a middle grownd exists. SJW and Neo-Nazi aren't your only choices.

Ok, so how do you solve the immigration issue so as to keep both sides satisfied?

Agreed. However, the one always gets it's strengths from taking swings at the other. That is why it will always be a back and forth thing. One will never be able to live in a fully neutral society because of it. And then you throw in extremes and the shift seems to be quicker almost like it's amplified as soon as the bottom and of the scale gets something to cling on and use it against the other. Like we have now with the Muslim migrants and attacks on civilians.

I don't know if you can satisfy both on every issue, especially this one, but if I were in charge of a country:

Don't let the trash in. Highly qualified professionals only and boot out any criminals quick quick.

That way you avert a flood that'll get everybody's backs up, they contribute to the economy and don't become an underclass prone to discrimination. Because you're getting the best of the foreign population they can endear themselves to the locals and have time to assimilate.

But that's just me. :p

Can you see any other party besides AfD that's advocating such a policy in Germany?

We pretty much agree on this issue, btw.

Don't really follow German politics but no, I don't. And that's what makes it dangerous, if only parties on the extremes are catering to what people want, we'll just get more extremists. The more center parties that don't have their heads up their arses the better.

Racist! :D

If the left get in, nothing's right.
If the right get in, nothing's left.

The pendulum is still swinging, but will eventually find a centre point.

Seems like France woke up and smelled the coffee and got there first.
