I planned to buy the ADSL package as soon as I return to SA from the Mid-East.

But what I see here makes me doubt...

Why should I buy something at a higher cost, but not much better than a mere modem?

The only reason to buy ADSL is:
- you are a big fan of Telkom
- you get it virtually for free
- you have faith in Telkom that they will sort it out soon.
If none of these apply, don't buy it.

If i realistically look at ADSL i find that when i am not pumping heavy data[:I] then normal browsing and software downloads do seem to be quite good.If all your settings on the PC was up to scratch like support staff proved to me then it works fine(felt like an idiot though). All in all i think they just marketed this service incorrectly.Never saw any defining as to what can or cannot be used on ADSL.

ADSL--A Damn Slow Link

I am blessed with cool DSL flatrate here in Germany, where I am currently living. I might be moving back to SA in Dec, and thought, hey cool stuff, SA got DSL as well.
I started browsing for prices and general info, and geeesh, glad I did.
(1) Starting with the price: wow, paying over R900 for the package per month is a big doozi! Here I am paying 25 Euro for my connection and 25 Euro flatrate, both from Deutsche Telekom. This is round about R450 with current exchange rates. Now taking into consideration that in SA people just earn less, the R900 is a big amount to pay for DSL service (even if it was good!)
(2) Then service: 3 Gb cap, that is absurd. I understand the international link and position of SA makes it a problem, but DSL is a service for people who want service! People who want to fork out R900 do so for getting the experience INet delivers to most people across the seas. I listen to live audio streaming constantly at home herte in Germany, and with my regular listening times, I would only be able to listen 1h40mins of music a day. Makes for difficult music preference decisions. Then the port priorities are also ridiculous. How can telkom judge what users use what type of applications? This is no equal service delivery!

In closure, I seriously considered getting DSL when I moved back, as it is so customary here. But alas, SA is still killing its chances for world class services. The geographical position of SA makes it paramount for even FASTER inet access, as this brings the world closer to SA!

Hi SeanSnyders

Thanks for the contribution to this forum. It gives us a much needed perspective on our problem.

It is very sad that one company is keeping the South Africa IT and business world back. We have very talented and skilled IT professionals, but the lack of telecom services makes it increasingly difficult to be competitive in a global market. What a sad situation.
