why i prefer the phat over the slim (ps3)

LOL I cant believe you guys...who cares how the ps3 looks? As long as its small and doesn't clutter your lounge. I have a 60gb phat and a slim and I prefer the slim because its smaller and therefore less in the way. 2 usb ports is a bit irritating but I can live with it. A ps3 is not meant to be looked at. The only time I ever look at it is if I put in a disk.

The only real advantages I can see of the slim are
1.It has a smaller cpu (45nm or whatever so makes less heat/use less power).
2.Bitsream HD audio output(whatever its called)
3.Who knows what other components inside may be more reliable(Blu ray drive)?

Now on the whole does this equate to any differences side of things well, It uses less power but does it run faster, do u get more FPS out of it? The audio thing is a bit more of sales pitch thing because in reality you can't hear the difference, and what difference is there between your amp or ps3 doing the processing on the audio?

So once you actually plug each device in, are there any new advantages ?
No, the games play the same, the blu rays play the same etc etc etc.
The old one does have substantial advantages, does linux, can play ps2 games. Even more USB ports can come into play.

So end of the day, the old PS3 is going to give you more.

A pretty massive feature in my book is HDMI Sync.
I can use my Bravia remote to do everything.

Few points:
WTF do you guys use your USB ports for? Only thing I can think of is guitar hero and a flash drive/ext hdd.
Who here has actually installed linux on there ps3? for what purpose?
The majority of PS3 phats sold couldn't play PS2 games either.

Maybe I'm a bit biased towards the slim but I also used a 40gb PS3 for a couple of months so know its pro's and con's to. End of the day a PS3 is a PS3 and I am stoked at the slim because of the tremendous value it is and I think from here on in PS3 will own the Xbox shiit now that the price is right.

use 4 USBs to connect: PS3 Eye/Singstar, PS3 Headset, GuitarHero and 1 USB cable to charge one controller while I play on the other. Would become irritating to unplug stuff. (Any decent piece of hardware has nowadays at least 4 USBs).

Ok... Doesn't really bother me I suppose because I unplug whatever Im not using to keep lounge looking neat but still, I have GH, 2x Contollers, and a ext hdd and never had to use more than 2.

I agree with these. Even though i do use more that 2 USB ports and even though i have a Phat.
I think the way forward is the Slim by far.
If anyone doesn't like their slim get hold of me and we can do a swap :P.

Didn't Sony drop 4x USBs about 18 months back?

Its handy, USB stick, 1 x controller on charge... thats not enough. Now i gotta get up to put the GH thingy in and unplug something, if the other controllers flat I gotta plug both of them in and then can't watch off the USB till theyre done, or else watch off the USB , and then have to sit wired to the console when i'm playing. Dont even bring singstar into this. USB must cost like R20 to produce, they should just stick in 8 at the bottom so i never have to walk to the ps3 unless i wanna change discs

I got 4 ports & NEVER use more than 2 simultaneously. I keep a notebook in the lounge purely for net browsing so if I am playing & my headset or controller starts getting low on battery power, I just put the notebook on the seat next to me & use it to charge the headset & controller.

Yeah. but it would be nice to know that if you needed 2 more, they're available. If they originally came with 4, why drop it to 2?

Just get a USB extender. They are so cheap!

I looked at the slims yesterday and I was impressed. Nothing wrong with it. better value for money than ... You guys know... and still better looking too!

i think the slim looks pretty good...

though there's this gnawing on my mind as I'm constantly thinking of this article i read where the guy said the ps3 looks like a George Forman... I was shocked until i stared a bit and... it kinda does-_-

For a second I was staring at my PS3 like whaaaaa

:D

The Guitar hero dongle has 4 extra ports on it....but yeeah, i'm getting a slim this week and will give feedback, if it's architecturally sound and more efficient, then i'm happy...nothing like a redesign...we can't all be aestetically happy, but if it's solid, efficient and well designed, then can't complain about that, especially when bought at a cheaper price :)
