Why Is Apple Allowed To 'Lock' their OS?

Why? Are high end business users clumsy, coffee spilling, laptop dropping spendthrifts who, for whatever reason, stand on their computers all day? :)

Well suppose you travel a lot and move around meeting to meeting... bump your laptop off the desk? Spill coffee on it? Throw it in the luggage and some component breaks? Have to push it through those security checks at airports. Besides these machines are LIGHT. They are tough and light. In addition in Japan all these salarymen crowd up these subway cars like sardines at peak times. Plus you get the benefit of a Japanese assembly - with top notch Q&A. When you have important stuff on your machine you just want to pay a bit extra and have more of an assurance that it will survive and you won't have to worry about getting a new laptop quickly in a foreign country (with all the corporate spyware possibly pre-installed), restoring backups, etc. All these are - just in case - scenarios.

Am i doing something wrong or does OSX search suck?, I know of a file on a different partition yet spotlight does not spot it or finder search....

Edit:
Quicksilver does a better job...

Try re-indexing the partition/drive
 
Yeah, I don't use my laptop as a traditional weapon, if a burglar breaks into my house I don't klap him with my laptop - I have a 9mm for that.....if I am having a shave in the morning, I typically don't plonk my iMac on the sink and use the camera on the display to show me where I am shaving.....because water will splash all over it.......and so I use a mirror to shave. My computers are well looked after, so for my purposes, the Mac's are solid and well built enough for their purpose.

I don't dispute that they are solid and well built but they're not the best built machines out there. These machines aren't just strong -- they're LIGHT and when you're traveling or going to meetings that counts. The business ruggedness attests to the build quality and use of shock mounted HDD/SSD units and Magnesium Alloy. Apple could go the Mg Alloy route too - it's stronger and lighter than Aluminum but their notebooks would be even more expensive. In addition the built is done in a Panasonic factory in Osaka. No-other maker can boast a "Made in Japan" sticker.

I run a windows 7 Desktop for games, a windows xp laptop for work because that is what was provided to me, a ubuntu 10.04 desktop as a media server on the home network and I got my wife a mac for her business work. The computer i find i work the most on at home - The MAC. nice easy to use friendly and never crashes - awesome and now that steam runs on mac I am gaming on it 2. so my personal preference is suprise suprise mac.
 
Greedy Apple is a reason for everything they do :) Limited hardware, high price, license restrictions, all those 'iStores'... everything works just to earn money, not for your satisfaction. Just hack 'em or ignore.
