The point is doesn't make any sense for them to do it. Why would a hardware manufacture sacrifice its own sales so other companies could sell their product? Best thing Jobs ever did is kill the clones by releasing OS 8 on his return.

Apple has ALWAYS done it this way. It was almost the downfall of the company (iPod saved them but still the lesson has not been learnt). Steve Jobs insist on making his software only work with APPLE hardware.

The practice of tethering software with hardware is pretty widely accepted outside of PC circles. You can't cross pollinate a Zen OS with a Zune. It's a perfectly acceptable philosophy - and Apple's strengths as a software developer are fairly circumscribed anyway. They don't have Microsoft's billions and they don't really want their ubiquity. But imagine if they had licensed the iPhone OS in a similar manner to Winmo - you'd have a fragmented install base, apps would never have taken off because devs would have had to cater for every imaginable spec. Even MS is now taking a similar approach with Winmo 7 - defining the parameters of the hardware very strictly to control feature bloat.

Unless they charged heavy licensing fees per PC sold by Dell, GigaByte etc. In this case a GigaByte clone would be more expensive than the Apple original BUT you'd have your neon lights, alien face, multi-coloured fans, water cooling with fluorescent liquid etc.

The time when MS ripped off QT Video and for once Video for Windows worked fast? Then Apple caught on, sued and MS settled out of court.
LOL....can Mac hardware get more expensive than it already is? YES, it can! Just throw in Water Leopard with the purchase and all the Mac fanboys dance around the campfire in pure ecstasy.
I love Apple btw.

As it has always been, people that don't do real world work get Apple products. The rest of the planet with real jobs, with real corporations, use Windows and Linux. Microsoft has 91% of the OS market, while Apple is niche market with 6.4% & 6.3% unaware that they're running a version of Unix.

Most music producers and designers prefer Macs. Video is big too. Heck 50% of Adobe Creative Suite licences are Mac version.I'm using Windows 7 at work, Ubuntu 10.04 at home.

And the day Adobe started to offer their products for Windows, the relationship between Apple and Adobe started to sour. I wonder why?
Cos now people with "inferior" & cheap pcs could also use Adobe Photoshop and Premiere? It's just not right.

I do *all* my work on an Apple running Mac OS X, and I am quite aware it's a version of Unix. I have a *real* job, with a *real* company, in the *real* world.
Just because you choose not to work on an Apple doesn't mean you can make assumptions about what the rest of us can/want/are able to do.

Microsoft has 91%(allegedly) but they sell an OS, a mac is not only an OS, so apple are doing well considering that they sell the machine to run the OS as well.

Microsoft owns 90% of the bottom of the market and Apple the bulk of the profitable market share.
It's not the 90's anymore and while the market share stats go to Microsoft, the profit share stats have Apple laughing all the way to the bank.
Consider that the two companies have effectively the same market capitalization and cash on hand.

Apple still can't touch the server market, neither can they touch harsh environment market - most expensive machines - or high end business market or high end CAD/CAE systems where notebooks with high end cpus and Quadro/FireGL GPUs are necessary.
I, too, use only Apple computers at work - it is my computer of choice for work and home.......it gets the job done with the minimum amount of frustration. PC's and windows had me tearing my hair out, and cursing Bill Gates on a regular basis.........matter of fact, my dog used to think his name was "f...youbillgates", as I was shouting that out all the time. I have personally seen many offices where there are only Apple iMacs in use, and yes, they do real work, and work real well. I think the only reason the majority of business' still use PC's, is due to habit and cost, old habit's die hard....they have been using something for the last 15 years and are scared of change. Apples, due to better build quality, better R & D, do cost more - and here the addage is true.......you get for what you pay for. If you want to be a tight-ass and buy a Ford, don't be jealous when a Merc drives past you every time you break down.

For business use NEC and Panasonic machines are actually built better than MB/MBP's. IBM machines were also built very well - not sure about Lenovo but those 3 makers trounce Apple for build quality and the amount of physical stress a machine can take with Panasonic putting shock mounted SSD/HDD, spill proof keyboards, machines which can take 100kg/150kg of weight, drop heights of desk height etc and are lighter than MB/MBPs. The cost however is high, a light (under 900g) NEC i7 ultra-portable costs $3,000 but high end business users will go with such reliable and light machines. The software however is the weak end - and they still run Windows but if Apple licensed OSX to Panasonic people would not buy Apple hardware anymore. For harsh environments, Pany Toughbooks actually warm themselves up (sub zero environments), are fully water proof, snow proof, can stop bullets, are sand/dust proof, be driven over by a HUMVEE etc - so the US Marines, oil rig workers etc all use them. Apple does not cater for those markets so it's not really accurate to suggest that Apple is the only high quality brand - they've just got best quality OS with high end (but not top end) hardware patted down.
