I've set Outlook to send/receive every five minutes, but I constantly get a 'time out' error message that the server did not respond in time....this is just SO pathetic.

Let me guess - they're running the mail server on one 486 pc?

It is pathetic because it is "free", not actually free as you are paying for it.

The free e-mail is also a good way to keep the user hostage when they start getting fancy ideas of moving to another service provider.

I have sent you a Gmail invite .......... do the right thing !

Hi Guys

We've caught some of own customers spamming, causing the servers to work a bit too hard....I can say that there is plenty of capacity with the servers located here in JHB and in CT for mail delivery. We've caught them and we are taking the appropriate action against them....

Servers should be back to normal within the next few hours.

Sorry this happened, but some clever spammers out there now getting past our controls. I wish there was a way to get rid of this evil!

Regards
Ed

Thanks Ed.

Hi Ed
That would be great if this was a once off.
Got this message BTW
[*] Connection established to 196.30.31.203
>> 0066 421 mail-01.jhb.wbs.co.za: Too much load; please try again later

The SMTP server speed is however an ongoing problem...................not just today. I have received this overload message on a number of occasions and generally just suffer slow response times and REGULAR timeouts.

 You really need to get this jacked up.

Maybe I'm contributing

Our internal mail (home-business LAN) is fetched from three POP3 servers ( of which iBurst is one) and distributed accordingly. [Using JANA server - freeware] Overkill, maybe, but I set the fetch to the lowest possible . . . every minute.

Quite often during the day, the server is unable to connect to the wbs server to fetch or receive.
Msg= -ERR Temporary problem, please try again later.
Times for today . . .
12:59, 13:06, 13:07, 13:15, 13:23, 13:26, 14:03, 14:09, 14:10, 14:13, 14:14, 14:19

Maybe the iBurst mail system is indeed taking strain.
Would you prefer me/we/us to reduce the POP3 fetch/send frequency ?
It's not that bad that we can't use it, but this no connection thing is new - only got very frequent in the last fortnight or so.

Mail servers

I have 5 aliases on wbs.co.za and 5 aliases on telkomsa.net.
My outlook goes through 20 operations when checking for mail to send and receive.
I have no problems with telkomsa.net.
I have had continuous problems with wbs.co.za which is why I went to Telkom for email hosting.

Ed, this requires serious attention - you don't want more of your clients doing this. It makes leaving iBurst painless once all email contacts have been advised of the telkomsa.net adresses.

spammers is one thing... and of course do you know that if you authenticate your SMTP server, problem solved. That doesn't rule out actual iBurst users who spam but catching the culprits in that manner is a lot easier.

Ed, seriously man.. you are costing my customers money and causing me embarrasment. I asked you guys to open up your firewall so I could use my mail server in the US. You did that. Then when you fixed my Cap of Death, its blocked again!!! Not very nice because I now have a customer who cannot send mail, its costing them a lot of money this downtime.

I asked you guys to open up your firewall so I could use my mail server in the US.
Why don't you get a MSA (Mail Submission Agent) setup on your US server??

Essentially - an SMTP process running on port 587 and only allowing SMTP AUTH connections. That way you are not restricted to use the iBurst SMTP server and at the same time allowing port 25 to remain firewalled thus allowing iBurst to protect their network from abuse.

I gave up on using iburst for smtp, or pop3, so now I just use Gmail :/

been trying to send 1 little email (5 lines of plain text, no attachments) all day today and been getting smtp error messages- the latest one being 'too many concurrent smtp connections'. If that isn't a server load issue please explain what it is.

Things are looking alot better, but there will some load the servers need to get through tonight. We expect everything to be OK in the morning.

Sorry all
Ed

I have seen what happens when a mail server queues up like I am sure your one did... and knowing your userbase... eina! Long day huh?

I am really starting to lose patience.
This is costing money in lost time - phone calls to see if mail has arrived, been sent etc.
What is so hard about fixing the email issues yesterday already.

Yeah I dont use iBurst mail either. GMail works alot better and I can check it on my mobile.

It's down yet again!

I have not been able to send any mail since 10:20 today!

Receiving mail seems fine, though.

It's damn frustrating and costing me money!!! :(

Ed, I sent you mail via mail2web.com. Did you receive it? How long before this mess is sorted out?

So . . . share if you can, please.
How long do we have before we need to scarper to other ISPs ?

My apologies! Should have elaborated! :o

Ed says (and I am sure he won't mind me posting it here!?):

Again the issue has come up, the servers are fine, it now looks like a
network issue. Engineers are on it.

Sorry again

Ed
