why is iburst slower than a snail on tranquilisers?

The prob. started on Sunday and continues. Even a pstn dial-up modem is faster at present. Download with iburst from international sites is like 3-6Kb/s and from local sites 11Kb/s (whereas I normally get like 65Kb/s from international sites)

Iburst modem signal strength is 92% (which its always been and never had a hassle). I’ve checked my local setup. IE cache is cleared. IP stack is reset. Malware checks done: No infection. Firewall (both incoming and outgoing) is heavily locked down, permitting only very basic comms on tcp port 80, 25, 110 etc.

Pings appear normal and as expected from known sites. Interesting is that minor downloads start fast (as per normal/expected rate) but very quickly drop down to snail’s pace, like its being severely throttled.
 
if you were getting the higher speed before, what has changed since then?? any hardware / software / patches / firmware changes etc??

Just tested with http://sourceforge.net/projects/tom.../1_28/Tomato_1_28.7z/download?use_mirror=garr and it was flying?

My browsing and downloads also seems a bit slower than usual since Sunday. Just did a test download now and got about 20 kb/s where I usually get around 50 kb/s during the day. But when I do the free midnight-to-morning download thing it goes up to about 100 KB/s.

My online gaming is very slow though. Almost unplayable. Never had a problem with that before. I was playing Modern Warfare 2 on the PS3 last night and got a msg saying that this server is only for people with a low ping and then I got kicked out. Never saw that one before.. Even now when I tried playing it was waaaay slower than usual.

Do you know the IP and I'll monitor it. I monitor all the major transits and if you give me the address I can see which transit it uses.
 
Nothing changed on/in my environment (and that's what freaks me why I'm suddenly having probs). Wasted a good part of the day trying allsorts to get a reasonable connection. Fed-up, so got a buddy with 3G to come over & install. Result: speedy for sure. Put iBurp back, and the snail is back.

Just for fun, tried the download at http://sourceforge.net/projects/toma...se_mirror=garr...

Started at a reasonable pace of 35MB/Sec, then quickly dropped down to 6.40KB/Sec, so a measly 2.73Mb file would be taking in excess of 7 minutes to download?!

aaargggghhhh!!!
 
oh btw, and I noticed that there appears to be a lot (much more than usual) of port scans/probes to iBurp IPs

for example, from source "1.2.3.4:3128" to target, say 41.213.93.75:60237 (and 60224, 60223 etc etc)

Yes, the sluts have given up on spam and are now looking for unprotected SIP servers. We blackhole the obvious culprits.

Can you PM me details of your setup as that has the symptoms of an MTU issue.

Hi Ronald,

I'm back at work again so I can't really test my speed during the day, but all seems fine when I connect after 6 in the afternoon.

Ruddy typos. Meant 35Kb/Sec of course (35MB/Sec is just wishful, very wishful, thinking ;) )

As with most "it was working now it doesn't" scenarios, everything was checked including MTU (and even whether the dogs had been fed and the lawn watered). It's always been set at 1352. Nevertheless, fiddled with that as well. Marginal improvements. Nothing at all to get excited about.

However, (now here's comes an interesting part): at about 12h40 yesterday, while I was (trying) to download something, the iBurp connection just dropped. Couldn't get back in for about 10-15 minutes. Thereafter... iBurp was flying again! (ok, ok, flying is used very loosely here, but nevertheless, it was back to its usual happy self)

So... [insert your own conclusions here]

Heuweloord as in close to Rooihuiskraal? Fixed an issue with the BTS there yesterday.

BTW: Optimal MTU is 1392.
