And when they are sorted by Album.

Imagine Michael Jackson's Thriller. I put that into my MBP and ask iTunes to keep the data. Except iTunes breaks the songs down into 3 categories that are not imminently obvious.

Check the metadata, specifically the Album and Album Artist fields. Make sure they are all the same and you'll be good to go. Was the album ripped from CD, bought through the iTunes Store or coppied from another music library?

Ripped from the CD. Put in the drive on my MBP and told iTunes to import.

Is it only the genre that changes? iTunes relies on CDDB/Gracenote for the information . . . which, in turn, relies heavily on the info users have supplied.

It was South African artists. I have never been convinced they take cddb seriously as an industry.

What I did was to highlight the relevant tracks. Delete the artist and then re-add the artist.
