Why is my pc so unstable?

I have an MSI board, and my system also gave hell until I set the o/c functions to standard (RAM settings included). Now she's as stable as the day is long. :)
 
There is no DOT in my bios.

I checked the restart pc automatically, and it was off. So clearly when the pc restarts it must be something else.

What is strange, i converted off to mp3 (6 cds at a time) and the temp went to 64 degree max and stayed there whilst doing to conversion. No reboot...100% working. Then after that i did 8 cd's converting ogg to mp3, and it did not even reach 60 degrees and it rebooted.

The converting is ogg files that i have on my pc, that i convert to mp3.

Any idea? My memory came out clean as a fiddle.
 
I have my setting to normal, no overclocking nothing in the bios.

What brand power supply have you got?

Even though it's a 500W, it could be way below spec to handle all the devices in your machine.

It's important to have a quality PSU because even though you may have a "500W" PSU, it's quite possible that it can't handle pushing out that amount of power under load.
 
Right click on "my computer" go "manage" and then go to the event viewer. Click on the "system" tab and then look for error events and post a few of the events here to have a look at... Just fix a PC that was blue screening and it was the ram after i did a bit of research. Try post events close to when the PC blue screens. They have time stamps on them so it should be easy enough to find.
 
@thisgeek: I do not know the name of the powersupply, but i have unplugged everything (that is how it is at the moment) with only the 60GB (C:) and the 200GB running.

@Scooby_doo: I did go to event viewer and looked, there are no errors whatsoever. There is warning, but they are only warning that a certain app could not connect to the internet. The pc does not give BSOD at all. Just reboots.

What tickles me pink is that it was at 64 degrees for about 15min while converting (without crashing), and then after a while when i converted again, it went to max 59 and rebooted. And i also noted the ambient temperature, it seems that be it cold or warm it has no bearing on the rebooting of the pc.

It seems like i have no choice but to find a 478 mb somewhere and burn it to see what it does, cause i have a sucpision it is the mb.
 
how many ram sticks dou have?

1.if u have more than one, pop one out and then just use the one stick. Put ur pc under load and wait to see if it blue screens. If not put the other Ram stick in and take the other one out. Put it back under load and see if that makes it blue screen.

2.Do the opposite if it blue screens the first time.

3.If they both cause it to blue screen than its prob not the ram.

4.Gonna have to find another mother board and swop out each componet to find the problem.

5.How about a format and a reinstall?

PS one of the motherboard RAM slots could also be messed up or dusty so be sure to test both slots with each stick of ram... I know it sounds like a mission, but hey u want it to work.

Maybe** it may not look like it is blue screening but it prob is just too quick to see.

HT can cause a lot of problems with certain software.
 
Sorry, haven't read the whole conversation, but :

The "Windows XP MCE 2005 with all the patches" is what is worrying me. As far as I know you do not get Windows XP 2005 so it might be that the pirated version which you have is causing the problems.

However, if that is not the problem (and you've actually tried installing a legit copy or even trying Windows 98) the problem may actually exist at the CPU.

Make sure you use thermal paste between the CPU core and the heatsink because I've had experience of the heatsink not sitting nicely on the core and the core overheating in any case.

But I'm pretty sure my hunch about the windoze being correct. Also run antivirus+spyware!!
 
I have only 1 stick of ram in my pc.
I have foramatted numerous times and installed XP and MCE.
MCE 2005 is available, as I am a MS Partner and I bought the Action Pack subscription where you get all MS Software with 10 keys each for R2500.00
 
I have bought a new rig, amd 3500+ and msi mb. Still using the same ram from the intel machine, and it has not crashed on me and it doesnt seem like its going to. So it's either the mb or cpu, everything points to cpy, but i think its the mb.
 
I had problems like that with my P4 3.0GHz. Had the motherboard replaced twice. Each time it came back and worked fine. Each time it came back HT was switched off, among other things, since that was the default on the mb. Then I switched on HT and changed the other bios setting to what I wanted and started getting random crashes. Eventually I caught on that the problems only stated happening after I have re-enabled HT. Took the PC back and showed them it worked fine without HT but crashed with HT. Two minutes later I had a new CPU. Never looked back since.

So, what I am trying to say it that it could be the CPU, even through everybody involved (including me) assumed in my case it had to be the motherboard. However, I am not saying it is HT. Could be something else in the CPU that is wrong in your case. Or not.
 
I had a similar problem that just suddenly developed overnight.

To cut a long story short, the problem lay with HT. After turning HT (Hyper Threading) off in the BIOS it now runs 100%.

Weird, because it used to work 100% with HT turned on. It took me a long time to narrow the cause down to this it must be said, tested pretty much every component in the rig. Definitely a HT issue.

EDIT: @gkm - soz, didn't read your post. But yeah, it reinforces my post! :D

My PC was also fine for a month or so, before it started going nuts. :) The Intel CPU has a three year guarantee, so I hope you are getting your CPU replaced as well.

The CPU (entire PC in fact) was purchased in Geneva, Switzerland. Slight problem...
