Hi

I just wanted to ask why is Openserve the most expensive fibre provider and they dont seem to do symmetrical either? I thought Openserve would be the cheapest as it is basically Telkom? What is the service like on Openserve once you do have your line?

It's the same business model as ADSL, less value for the same or more money. The other providers don't have to support the behemoth that is Telkom / Openserve so they can be more nimble on their pricing

It goes over Telkoms IPC, just like ADSL. Thats why the prices are so ADSL like overall (except no R200 analogue line fee), the ISPs have to pay IPC costs.

Your service will be whatever the ISPs service is like, can take 1 to 6 months or more to install from application (6 weeks for me) , that's because demand is high for the openserve install techies.

Here is my 10mbps openserve line with Afrihost:
Ping: 4ms
Download: 9.98Mbps
Upload: 4.46Mbps

The negative with the other providers is much smaller footprint. Openserve doing a massive roll out.

By the time another provider rolls out here they will need to offer a super deal to get anyone to move over.

Atm you are unfortunately limited by whoever decides to install in your area first.

Small providers cheaper and better service.
Openserve normal telkom service and expensive.

If you had a choice in most areas you would the non openserve options.

Thankfully here in Lynwood frogfoot will likely be done with their installation before openserve even pitch...

You can run any normal ADSL account on Openserve so MUCH more flexibility in chopping and changing ISPs.

Unfortunately for me, Frogfoot draw the line at Border Rd east, which is the boundary between Menlo and Lynnwood. I'm the first road in Menlo :( So Openserve has taken the gap and laying down fibre ...

Can you perhaps explain further on this, I have an uncapped mweb adsl premium account just sitting there doing nothing. Can I use this on my openserve fibre line?

Yes.

The reason Openserve is more expensive, is because it uses IPC. Just like ADSL.

Will the account not be rate limited? E.g. I have a 10mbps ADSL account with MWEB (600 gigs daytime, uncapped night-time). If I have a 100mbps Fiber line (Openserve), can I use my MWEB login credentials and get the full 100mbps?

Usually capped accounts run at full speed. Only uncapped accounts are rate limited.

Thanks
And how would I get around the fact that mweb uses the telephone number on their accounts e.g I have to provide the telephone number on the mweb adsl portal, think you allowed up to 4 numbers.

Openserv is ****. GPON network compared to AE network. Use them only until you can jump onto Vumatel or Frogfoot or something.

Is this still true?

So I can get the fibre from Openserve with a really low cap and then buy extra bandwidth from an ISP? It just allows me to use it via a PPPOE connection?

And IPC is expensive because ... it does nation-wide transport supporting users in 100 cities and towns. Also note that the IPC costs apply equally to DSL and Fibre, so until Fibre subscriber numbers pass DSL on Openserve, the IPC price will be higher than it should be (than if there were only Fibre), but will reduce as adoption increases.

Openserve fibre is available in over 20 different towns and cities at the same price everywhere. Vumatel et al are available in about 5 cities. Their costs will most lilely increase as they support more deployments outside the major metros.

And what exactly is wrong with GPON for residential deployments? Google Fibre is also GPON ...

(Openserve has other products, such as Ethernet Express, for business applications).

Hey Ranger but the networks guy you are does GPON not have limiting bandwidth capabilities? Bandwidth requirements will just increase in the future so you will end off adding more and more OLTs which could get costly?
