Why is transferring a line such a mission?

Hi

I currently pay webafrica for my line rental. My area was recently upgraded to VDSL and I'm trying to transfer my line to vox, as a 20mbps vdsl line is cheaper with them.

When i transferred my line from telkom to webafrica, it was pretty simple. No forms to fill in or documents to submit. Everything was handled quite easily. Vox now tell me I have to complete an authorisation form, provide proof of address, certified copy of ID and 3 months' bank statements.

Why on earth would they need all of that to transfer an adsl line? This is the type of thing normally asked for for FICA documentation. Is it easier with other service providers?

Why not just have your VDSL line with Telkom. Then you can switch data providers as you like.

**Not sure why you have to provide so much info. Probably so someone can just 'tick' a box to say they have it.

This is standard procedure for new customers at vox. It's not FICA, it's to establish credit risk.
None of this is usually required to migrate a managed line from one ISP to another.
You should just have to migrate the line back to telkom and then ask the new ISP to take over the management of the line. It's pretty easy at Afrihost, you just fill in some info online.

I called the telkom call centre to get the pricing since it's not listed on their website for some reason. A 20mbps vdsl line is R540. Vox charges R410.

The other reason I don't understand why vox is making things so difficult, is that I am already a customer with them. I have a fatpipe account which I've used for just over a year now. Shouldn't they already have all my details?

You clearly didn't check very well, 20Mbps at Telkom is R499 and 40Mbps is R599.

I can get 40Mbps for R16 more a month but it's always a hassle having your line with a 3rd party.

I called and asked. How is this not checking well?

You said it's not listed on their site, if you go to the Telkom site and choose shop - home, it's the first thing it shows.

ADSL Elite xDSL - R499

ADSL Elite Plus VDSL - R599

The call centre person clearly doesn't know what they're talking about.

I saw that before I called. But it says "excludes internet" and "excludes line rental" which is why I called to get the price.
