So I got a movie off the internet (yes I own the DVD) it was the HD version of one of my fav movies and it was obviously .MKV format. Put it on my USB and plugged it into my Sony Bravia only to find out that the audio codec isnt supported whilst the video plays fine.

Now I see Samsung TV's and BR players are DTS compatible, so were sony just selfish not to buy the DTS licence like other TV's?

But you have a roku right? Why you using your TV?

Well, I guess ill just have to watch it on my PC then.

Check out the Chromecast only R699 on Takealot couple that with Plex (free) - not a bad option for your situation provided you have wifi in your house.

You could re-encode the audio very quickly without touching the video stream with ffmpeg:
ffmpeg -i theMovie.mkv -vcodec copy -acodec ac3 -ab 448k newOutput.mkv
You can find ffmpeg binaries here: http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/

This is rather going off topic, I know how to get the movie working, I just wanted to know why Sony doesn't incorporate the DTS codec.

What TV do you have?
What HT do you have?

Maybe then we can actually help you.

But why would your TV need the codec, it's not like it can do 5.1 by itself.

It's your sound system that needs to support it.

Not the reason :)
Other codecs can also do more than 2 channels and DTS also supports less than 5.1 channels.
It probably has something to do with royalties.

Are you sure it is DTS? Just because it is HD, does not mean that the audio is encoded in DTS. The audio could be encoded in AAC, for example.

btw have you checked if your TV supports DTS in other containers? Maybe it is just a MKV container issue.

Sony didn't pay whoever for the DTS licence, that is what I'm on about.

Are you sure? What does your TV manual say? And as I said, are you sure it is DTS?

HD does not guarantee that the audio is DTS.
