why such a big price difference between Afrihost and Mweb uncappped?

I've been downloading some old series for my parents and after 16 days I have been throttled by Afrihost :(

BUT, Afrihost's throttling still means smooth youtube, no reloading of web pages and I can actually access Speedtest.net



Throttling sucks...

Correction. Shaping. Not throttling. And what would you prefer...having your torrents a tad slower or having everything slow down?

It is unfortunately a reality that bandwidth in SA is a limited resource and needs to be managed. On Afrihost I at least know that if I want to browse, stream or youtube I can. Others might have a different opinion but my downloads will finish eventually...if it takes a day or two longer so be it...I can at least still enjoy the internet while I wait :D

You misunderstood my post. I wasn't complaining, I was comparing it to the 0.15mb/s speeds the unfortunate ones still with MWEB got. I'm in no rush to get the torrents I am busy downloading, it is just something nice for my parents. My news server downloads are still getting full speed (10mb line)

Well that's what I find interesting. The cost to support abusers vs the loss in their subscription revenue. What MWeb have failed miserably at is defining those limits as the other iSPs have. It doesn't stop me from supporting them given my history with other ISPs, I've only had good service from them (excluding the occasional SEACOM hiccup) and if I am targeted by their system as being an abuser I will let everyone know and move on.

How much data have you downloaded in those 16 days before getting throttled? You know context is important and all :D

I threatened to move from OpenWeb to Afrihost for many months and 1.5 months back I eventually did.
I wish I had gotten off my butt those many months back and just done it. The two can't be compared.

OpenWeb Gold 6mbps to Afrihost Business 6mbps.

We're not saying that it's non-essential at all.

Our only intention is to protect the network. As a non-realtime service it gets less priority than, say, streaming or gaming. However, torrents get lowest priority and HTTP downloads get more priority on the network. So we do shape HTTP downloads, but to a MUCH lesser extent than torrents, NZB's and other P2P.

As mentioned, it's shaping - we NEVER throttle.

Also, please understand that we only shape when we have to. We don't punish clients by putting them in a "naughty corner". When demand is high, we shape only to the extent that we have to - to protect the network from high latency and slow speeds, and to protect priority real time services (for the best experience). We unshape, or shape very little, for as long as we possibly can in order to give everyone as much bandwidth as the network can allow at any given time :)

I am very happy with the way Afrihost implement their system.
Kicks the hell out of Mweb, thats for sure.

Afriman, do you uncapped packages share the same shaping policy as your capped packages? I'm on a capped package and the only reason I'm not on uncapped is because I enjoy streaming, but if your shaping policies are the same, then maybe its time I look at uncapped.

On capped nothing is shaped.

On uncapped only realtime data is unshaped while downloads via http and p2p can be shaped when needed.

There is no shaping on capped. But we don't shape streaming (or any real time services) on Uncapped. So you could say they are the same in that there is no shaping policy applied to streaming on either :)

We don't have an Uncapped trial up and running I'm afraid.
You can sign up for an account though, if you aren't 100% happy with we'll give you double your money back :)

err... you cant do that, one has shaping one has not :p So what you meant to say is grab an account and make us pay you double your money back after ~2 months if your not happy

True, Uncapped can be shaped at times on downloads and torrents, and we also apply QoS on the traffic for best overall experience. However, if you're using mainly realtime services, the experience should be very similar :)
