Why worry about the price?

 All we see is the high price of ADSL in this country. As far as I am concerned the price is ok it’s the fact that I am not getting what I paid for that upsets me. You pay for a 512 but you are lucky if you ever reach any thing close to it. Here are my test results for the last 7 days. Oh and this is an unshaped 512 account. BUT we all seem to accept this NO problem ?????

Last 24 hours Last 7 days
Number of tests 24 96
Download speed 292.15 KBits/sec
36.52 KBytes/sec 362.18 KBits/sec
45.27 KBytes/sec
Upload speed 225.06 KBits/sec
28.13 KBytes/sec 253.14 KBits/sec
31.64 KBytes/sec
DNS Speed 673.00 mSec 2326.00 mSec
Latency 0.00 mSec 0.00 mSec

I dont think most people get it that bad, infact the 192 and 384 packages often go over their specified speed. Obviously 512kb is a bit fast for SA to handle... time for 128k HomeDSL from Telkom

the price is ok? glad you have the cash. there is life after email :)

wow, I don't think in UK when it says 8 Mbps, you get true 8 Mbps 24x7 ... so I don't think that this is such a huge issue, as long as the speed is reasonable.

I found the speed greatly varying depending on what are you doing. With few exceptions, I can't complain about the speed, even international, but I am on 192 kbps, and I don't care much about latency either. But the pricing seriously pisses me off!!!!!!!! I have to count the bloody bits while this monkeys at telkom make 7.5 billion profit !!!!!!!!!

You cant expect wire speed 24/7 on a shared service such as ADSL. Another way to look at it is ... your sampled average contention ratio is not even 2:1

I get like 460. The reason is probably because I live like right next to the exchange box thingy.....lol :p

Ive got a 386 and I am getting roughly those speeds.
I think its time for an upgrade, maybe a 486? or even a PENTIUM??! :D

Please tell me you are joking

Nope we seem to see the following no matter what Telkom service we have the price comes down so does the service. When the call cost came down the durations were manipulated in such a way we ended up actually paying more but no one seemed to notice. The recent price cut on ADSL WOW it’s now cheaper, the speed dropped drastically. Now if we have another price cut we will once again see the speed drop. Remember with every price cut more people subscribe and they do not increase the bandwidth with this. So we now have 22 million people trying to use the 56k bandwidth that they had when we only had 2 users. So now it’s more money for then less bandwidth and slower speeds. It is beyond me what people are doing with a 1024 connection. Why 1024 when in fact we would all be just a well off using a 192 at the lower price.
