Why you should consider a Solid State Drive investment

Just a pity there is no stock atm

Local Companies have been giving me kuk about no SSD stock, I usually stay away from Takealot because of the whole importing story, but looks like I have no choice atm :wtf:

What importing story? They don't do amazon imports anymore.

I have trouble fitting everything I need on a 512gb drive so until I can afford something in that range I'll have to make do with my 40 second boot time (I mean honestly how many times a day do people reboot so that it becomes relevant?) and slower w/r speeds.

I think a more viable option for me is going to be removing my optical drive and raiding two hard drives.

What? :erm:

You do realize that an SSD doesn't need to be the only drive in your PC? You can have OS and most used apps on your SSD and everything else on your mechanical drives.

Also it's not just PC boot times, it's EVERYTHING boot times.

I have a laptop - space is limited.

I run an SSD 128gb for my OS and my most used Apps. But even having my entire steam folder on my mechanical drive. The boot times are faster, because any resource that is required from the OS by any application is fetched instantaneously. The investment is well worth it IMO.

I've got a 3 year old ; quad core Q8400 2.66ghz cpu, 4GB RAM, Radeon HD4890. I don't play a lot of games these days but the PC boot up time could use a shot in the arm.

Worth upgrading to a 128GB SSD?

Is it just me or has the price of 256GB drives not come down the past year.

I need one badly as I want to run VMs.

Jeez, my buddy sent me photos of prices at a retail store in Shinjuku (Japan) today. Their SSD pricing is slightly more expensive than ours. Same story with their 500GB 2.5" portable HDDs though he did manage to find himself a good deal on a 2.5" 1.5TB HDD.

I'll bug him to find better pricing on the SSDs and see what he comes up with :p

Buying hardware is NEVER EVER EVER EVER an investment. Unless you anticipate the Rand crashing or the memory suppliers all jacking up their prices by 100% or more, hardware is never an investment. It always deteriorates because of usage, better models come out and cheaper models come out. Always.

Now maybe if you are a professional and having faster disk access and safer access in regard to shocks, then it is not an investment. If you do make money with your computer, then maybe an SSD is able to help you make more money and that's the only exception.

For most people an SSD is not an investment.
