Was that really necessary? I know there's the possibility of other apps coming into the store subject to Microsoft's scrutiny, but you really didn't have to do that - I know Mozilla can create a full-screen port of Thunderbird, they certainly have enough resources to dedicate to it. All that I'm saying now is that there won't be any desktop versions of these apps. Should I bolden parts of my post to make you see whatever point it is that I think you're missing?

Firstly, it's always wise to have at least 1 POP account, otherwise your mail is at the mercy of your provider. Keep a local copy of all mail. Secondly, IMAP is a receive only technology that provides a view onto the mailbox on the server. It's not used for sending email. It also uses SMTP. My guess is that they have adopted that approach because RT is a tablet and tablets have limited storage space. I personally wouldn't use POP on a tablet but it should still support it.

Then again besides this issue I setup a Gmail account yesterday on a windows R tab, and because it has the mail preset already it worked within seconds perfectly.. But you will fight to get your own domain on their.
