Why you shouldn’t pay your e-tolls

I really don't understand why on earth they don't have booms.

:wtf: Booms on the Ben Schoeman? In rush-hour?

Can you imagine the epic queue that will be the result of this?

To give you an idea, Middelburg Toll Plaza is a 20-lane (10 east and 10 westbound) plaza. During rush hour times (depending on the direction of traffic and the time of day) traffic will back up even though all 10 (east/west) lanes are open... Heck Maputo Toll plaza is the same size of Middelburg, and they have regular queue backups... And traffic there is lighter than what you will experience on the Ben Schoeman...

Now, try to scale Middelburg toll plaza up to fit on the Ben Schoeman.

Yup, cannot be done. Will need a supersized toll plaza, and there's no room on the Ben Schoeman for that kind of thing.

One of the reasons for going with e-toll as you don't need a physical toll plaza with booms.

Why not? It works well in other countries. If you have an 'etag' you go through a special lane where you don't even need to stop, just slow down and the boom automatically opens for you and closes behind you. Those that don't have tags queue to pay.
Of course this is done on the on-ramps and off-ramps

No. It's it's a legitimate question. It works fantastically overseas everytime I use it. You just zip through the tolls, just having to slow down a bit as you approach and the boom opens.
And it solves the problem of non-payment

Huh? Milan has much more traffic than Joburg, and I've never had to queue there.
I also don't know you would want them on the highway rather than on-ramps and off-ramps...
