Report The peak-time shoulder lane is closed on both carriageways between the Allandale Road exit and the Buccleuch Interchange - expect additional delays in both directions
Severity Level 5

Anyone know why the shoulder lanes have been closed for almost the whole week, yet there is no logic to it as there are no obstacles in the lanes at all????

Because the system has been undergoing testing and upgrades. The electronic message signs said so since Sunday. Also note that the use of the shoulder lane has not become a right. It will always remain the "property" of the emergency services, police and so on. The shoulder may only be opened when the operator in the control centre is 100% sure it is safe for motorists to use it. Any risk, including system issues, forces him/her to keep the shoulder lane closed. Often motorist will not be aware of potential risks ... as well as emergency requirements.

Bottom line: the use of the shoulder lane should never be taken for granted.
