Why's my browser so damn slow?

Help.
(I don't know if this is the right place to post this. If I need to move it, please tell me.)

Telkom ADSL speedtest a moment ago Ping: 40 ms Download: 16.77 mbps Upload: 0.83 mbps
Browser: Chrome Version 72.0.3626.121 (Official Build) (32-bit) Up to date
Operating System - Windows 7 Home Basic 32bit
Processor - Intel Core i5-2520M processor (dual-core, 2.50GHz, 3MB Cache)
Memory - 4GBx1 PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3

Only a few extensions running... Data Saver, Google Keep , Roboform password manager, UBlock
Limited number of tabs open.
No other programs running except maybe Excel is open at times

BUT.... loading gmail I often get a "..not responding" message. The spinning gismo stops for significant time and starts again. Gmail takes ages to start. This is where the slowness is most noticeable.

Opening new tabs can take ages. Just sluggish all round. Some websites loading faster than others which can be expected but the slow ones can be very slow. Scrolling can be a nightmare

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I am planning on upgrading my computer soon.
 
Do you have a normal hard disk? If you dont have SSD and you running windows, its going to be very slow. The amount of RAM or CPU you have doesnt really improve the performance. I changed OS to get a usable system (as I have a normal HDD)
 
too many addons installed on your browser ?

A few things that I'd suggest to try and narrow down the problem:
  • Is it also slow immediately after a reboot?
  • Does the problem persist in Incognito mode?
  • What's your RAM usage looking like? Are you paging a lot?
  • Try installing Firefox - does the problem persist?
Line seems fast enough. @gamer16 is probably amazed by how modern your hardware is, so that's not likely the problem. Chrome is memory-hungry though, so that's the best guess that I have.

Exactly, I know how to get the most out of the little I have, even moving things regularly needed to the inside of platters:ROFL:

i run Chrome on my Mac Air 2012 model at home and it only has 4gb RAM but it does have a SSD.
My surfing is lightning fast on the latest IOS.
But i agree Chrome is hungry on RAM, do PC's still use page swapping on the HDD ot whatever it is called again? (Simulate more RAM) In that case I think a SSD will help. Either way OP should upgrade to SSD as they are dropping in price and everyone loves the boot up times on these puppies
 
Just noticed that you're actually running 32-bit Windows. Wow, I haven't seen a 32-bit operating system since... well... a long time ago.

You won't be able to manage more than 4GB of RAM as far as I know. Unless Microsoft did something funny? Other people know more about this than me.

But yeah, check the RAM usage. And disk I/O as others have suggested.

Pffff boot up times, just don't shut down, lowers your boot up time to the turn on time of your monitor:ROFL:
 
Had similar issues when our Telkom exchange had some damaged components and caused severe packet loss (12-15%).

Run winmtr or pingplotter to www.google.com or wherever and post the results here.
 
Have you transferred /Imported any urls from an older system? have you cleared the cache lately? A pain to do this I have found at times that after a Chrome update a large cache causes problems while the new version tries to find everything again. Clearing the cache can be a pain but it is necessary sometimes.
Disable all extensions temporarily and then add them back one by one.
 
I notice winmtr has not been updated for a long time? is anyone still working on the software?

LOL I switch my laptop on and off every morning and again when i get home.
From hitting the power button to going to the fridge to get a beer the radio starts playing in about 30 seconds or less.
Thats me switching UPS on and powering laptop so router and fiber box etc must all boot up.
My ISP told me my internet fiber box has a built in linux machine as well :oops:
Anyways, SSD all the way, screw spin ups !
 
Run crystaldiskmark and post the results here.

Make sure nothing is running and make sure the laptop is fully booted in windows.

As mentioned before 4GB isnt going to cut it especialy with Chrome.

This isnt a troll but open MS Edge and do some comparisons, chrome is a RAM glutton.

That is why I have not used chrome since MS Edge was released! works perfectly well for me.
 
Upgrade your machine if you can. An i5-2520M with 4GB of memory doesn't cut it anymore.

I love Chrome, but it sucks on slow hardware. My potato of a work laptop struggles with Chrome - I avoid using that thing as much as possible.
 
this sounds like a winblows problem of not having sufficient RAM
Do any of you winblowers run on 4GB RAM with an SSD? Also slow surfing Chrome or not?
