Wi-Fi issue with Dlink G2562DG

Hi All

So the Xyzel fibre router supplied by my ISP just stopped working after 3 years and I decided not to order a replacement as I had a spare Dlink G2562DG that I could use in the interim however since I set it up every morning I have to reboot the router as I can see the Wi-Fi network but no devices are able to connect to it. Is there some setting I missed out on?
A buddy used this router before me and he had no issues with it but he did do a reset before returning it.
 
Perhaps you can flash the router with Open-WRT (or similar) firmware?
i updated it with the latest firmware as available from D-link but would be keen to try Open-WRT but is it possible to flash this model with Open-WRT?
 
So I changed the power supply to the original one for the D-link G2562DG as previously I was using a power supply from another D-Link and so far it seems to be ok and hasn't given me any issues.
 
And the issue seems to be back…
I noticed on my devices it was unable to get an IP address from the router even after turning off Wi-Fi,
forgetting the Wi-Fi and trying to reconnect.
DHCP is enabled on the router and there’s no other device giving out IPs, I’m only using 2.4ghz and have 5ghz disabled.

Check whether you can still access the web interface of the router using a pc that is connected to one of the lan ports. If so, navigate to Management -> Logs -> Logs and check the various log levels to see if it logged any messages regarding wifi connectivity or dhcp requests.

Out of interest, do you have a lot of neighboring wifi networks around your property? I have a similar situation at my house (different access points) where the 2.4Ghz network shows that you are connected but there is no throughput on it. I suspect that it must be caused by interference from other wifi networks in the area. In the end I switched to the 5Ghz network and added a second access point to solve the range problem.

Download a 'wifi analyzer' application on your phone or computer and run a scan to show all the available access points and the channel numbers on which they operate. Most of these apps can recommend the best channel number which will likely be a channel with the least number of access points or the one with the lowest signal strength from other access points. Try changing your wifi channel and set the bandwidth to use 20Mhz intead of 40Mhz under the advanced wifi settings section.

Let me give that a shot as I do know there is quite a bit of congestion in my area, unfortunately I cannot switch to 5ghz as I have few devices that only work with 2.4Ghz

After my last experience with a Dlink router, I won't touch them ever again.

Other things that I would try (in no particular order):
- Ensure that both devices are running the latest available firmware.
- Factory reset both the DLink and TP link routers and set everything up again.
- Check whether a device connected to one of the ethernet ports on the dlink is able to access the internet even when the wifi appears to have failed. This will highlight whether the problem is limited to wifi devices or whether it is caused by other connectivity problems.
- Try using the google dns (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) instead of the dns settings supplied by your isp. Restart your router/client devices so that it forces them to obtain and use the revised settings.
- Switch off the extender to try and isolate whether the Dlink's wifi problem persists when it is the only access point.
- If possible setup the extender (or another router/AP) as a dumb access point by connecting the lan port on the extender or another router/access point to the lan port on the dlink. Disable wifi on the dlink and change the lan ip of the extender to be one of the ip addresses outside of the dlink's dhcp pool. Set the default gateway on the dumb AP device to the ip address of the main router e.g. 192.168.1.1. This assumes that the wired network can still access the internet.
- Check on the web interface of the TPlink extender whether it is able to pick up a strong signal from the Dlink. An extender should be positioned midway between the main router and where you want to the signal to be extended to. It should not be placed at the remote location where you want the signal to be extended to since it will suffer from the same interference problems created by neighboring networks. If the extender is connected using ethernet cable then you can place it at the remote location since there will be no transmission losses on the network cable.
- Look at placement of both the Dlink and TPLink. Try putting both devices in open areas without nearby obstacles and raise them off the floor. Antennas must be in the vertical position as this will cause the wifi signal to travel further.
- Check that your isp does not block the router's mac address in an attempt to force usage of their router.
- Buy a second hand router/access point on FB marketplace/Gumtree. There appears to be an over supply of unused routers that nobody wants and you should be able to find one close to you for relatively cheap. Check the specs for something that preferably supports gigabit networking and mu-mimo wifi N/AC support. Mu-mimo allows multiple clients to stream data at the same time without having to wait on each other.
