I would like to test the waters. Please give comments and insights.

I would like to manufacture and import a wifi power adapters and multiplugs

So that you can switch appliances or anything plugged in the adapter on and off remotely through an online app.

Would you guys buy something like this or am I wasting my time. It would Cost in the region of R300 - R500

I will do it properly. In terms of getting it manufactured and have it SABS approved etc...

I know you get a Dlink one but it is made for international markets.

Yeah also thought about this and making one myself for fun with a raspberry pi and a relay. As long as you have a nice smooth software interface it could be popular. And as long as the rated current is at least 16A...

I would invest time in making that switching unit not wifi, but rather communication over the power network, like EoP adaptors. This way you can manufacture the electronic "switch" at a cheap price, and its modular.

So you can build your module into a standard light switch modules that you can replace the standard light or plug switches with the clever one, and if you want you can do the clever multiplug one as suggested.

You can build your module into standard circuit breakers, then you can control the pool pump, gate motor, external lights, the posibilities are endless.

Each device have a unique "mac" address, then they auto descover each other, and build a network of devices. Somewere in your house you have a EoP adaptor (This device can have a Rasbberry PI build into with a web server and api to link apps etc, basically the controller and interface from pc to power network), that you can connect from app or pc program or webbrowser to your power device to control them.

I know stuff like this exist, but is really expensive?!

we should chat openshaww. I've connected my home (garage motor, driveway gate, pedestrian gate, alarm & outside lights). I have a server running and built an android app to control it all (local / remote)
I was renovating my house and so I was fortunate to lay a lot of conduit & cabling which lead to a usb relay controller connected to my server. For devices where I could not lay cabling, I used wifi switches.
Wifi switches would ultimately be the solution to my business plan of connecting up homes, however I am paying about R600 - R700 each which is a bit much..

Also, The wifi switches I currently use tho, allow me to telnet into them via my router without the need for a home server to control it. I have this option setup locally, however I need to investigate the security risk of opening the port for each switch to be accessed remotely...
