I am now using an SMC usb wifi dongle on top of Ndiswrapper and it works, but I have got minor issues (like whenever I connect a USB mouse, the kernel locks up after a while; and I can only get WEP to work, but on Windows it used cope with WPA2).

I sort of want to get a dongle that gets recongnized out-of-the-box by ubuntu, no hassles, but my problem is, the hardware they describe on ubuntu wifi docs is sort of taken out of South African shopping context.

I want something relatively cheap with at least proven WPA out of the box and available, say, from www.digitalplanet.co.za or whatever.

Could you help with suggestions?

we aim to please. glad you were satisfied with our service.

jaarik, if you're in Jo'burg, stop by PC International in Randburg. They sell (or did, last time I was there) a Canyon CN-WF518 USB Wifi dongle that uses the RaLink chipset. There are linux drivers (and they supply a Mac driver too, which is why I bought it initially). It was pretty cheap too.

I haven't tried it in Ubuntu, but I use it successfully in Debian. I had to install the driver but that's quick and painless.
