Hey guys,

I would like to use iBurst and a Wireless router to set up a wi-fi for my house so that I can connect various machines (desktop PC, laptop, iPad) to the wi-fi, but I have a few questions:

1 - What router hardware do I need - what should I look out for?
2 - I have the desktop modem, do I need a router that has a USB connection?
3 - How do I set up the system once I have the hardware?
4 - Must the router and the modem always be on in order to "establish" the wi-fi ?
5 - Any other considerations?

Thanks in advance
Vic

I use the cheap MR3420 with great success with a iBurst desktop modem.

It includes the 3G USB connection, but you can connect via ethernet. Very easy to setup, just put in your username and password and you are set to go.

Router and modem must be on to establish connection.

You can purchase the router from Uniterm.

When I was still with iburst, I used a super cheap Asus WL 520g to good effect (am still using it with my adsl modem).

Sent from my U20i using Tapatalk

if you have the desktop modem then a router with lan ports is fine, i personally prefer the Linksys wrt54g as its cheap and easy to set up
with regard to your question about bith being on for wifi, if you only need the wifi to be on for pc,'s on the network to conect to each other then te modem does not need to be on, but if needing to conect to the internet then both need to be on

1. well, i use TP-Link MR3420 one with 3g support, works great for me, web interface is easy to use too, but if you want just wireless router without 3G then this is the bes from TP-Link TP-LINK WR1043ND 300MBPS ULTIMATE WIRELESS N GIGABIT ROUTER
2. Nope, you dont need a router with an USB connection.
3.Most router have a web interface, all you need is follow the wizard provided, setup the PPPoE connection(iburst username and password setup)

4.wireless Router must be on to have a wifi going for sure, but if iburst modem is off, wifi will still be there just without the internet connection.

5. consider where you put the wireless router and the range that covers, as you want to achieve the best performance, e.g, set up in middle of the house, or where you want to have net the most.
you might want wireless router that have better range if you have bigger house.

PS. You need a WAN port wireless router not an ADSL router for iburst modem, telkom use the phone cable, iburst one use the network cable

Thanks guys ... what are the things I should be looking out for if I want to set up a wi-fi connection ... speed?

well pretty much all the routers we mentioned here will have the same speed since they all dependant on the speed of you internet connection.
for transferring internally (as in between pc within your network) also they all pretty much the same s they all work on 802.11n *(Wireless-N )

I am battling to get my hands on a Broadband Router ... wow !! Don't know if it's because of where I live (Nelspruit) or the time of year but all the places I have gone to (Dion Wired, Incredible Connection, Game) only have ADSL routers or Modem/Router combinations .... does anyone know where else I could try?

all those shops mentioned wont have it...i tried too. I got mine at Duxbury in Joburg. its a Netgear RP 614 v4. cost was around R 350.00. It has a WAN port RJ45 which you connect to the iBurst Desktop Modem. What i did is then use my existing Netgear DGN 2200 wireless adsl router which connects to the RP 614. Now i have wireless coverage throughout my house on the iBurst network. wireless coverage and speed is obviously dependent on the AP used... works well
