I've either been barefoot, or worn flip-flops (albeit it decent Hurley ones), for the past 6 or so years.

My feet have developed cracks on my heels and big toes, which pedis and my foot spa help somewhat.

I've also had a few problems with debilitating big toe pain. The latest, in my right big toe, has lasted 1.5 weeks, and I'm still trying to fix it, having limped and walked on the side of my right foot since. I've narrowed the problem down to over-flexing my big toes, i.e. bending down and stretching them forward, as well as to my right foot's bunion. Currently I have no joint pain in my right big toe, however my bunion is very tender. I have also constantly 'clicked' my right big toe since I was a young teenager.

I feel it's time to start wearing supportive shoes more often. Not only for the cracks, but to help my big toes.

My feet are wide, so I'm looking for wide supportive shoes which will also put less pressure on my right foot's bunion.

My favourite style of shoes is Adidas' 'Stan Smith' – https://superbalist.com/men/shoes/s...oil-commercial-pack/783905?clickRef=catalogue. I also don't mind the look of trainers. I dislike the typical modern chunky sneakers look. I'm not fussy about brand, but I also don't want to look like a grandpa.

Please advise?

Pain in left big toe, "wyntoontjie" aka Gout. Most people get their first gout attack in the left big toe.

Cracked heels and toe, sand/grind/rasp all the hard extra skin every few weeks

Cracked feet are probably (partially) from being barefoot all the time which causes your feet to dry out. Could help if you moisturise your feet and maybe wear socks to bed. Also scrub off dead skin with a pumice stone as the above post says.

Roger that, am already there.

Many moons ago we used to go to a place called Big & Tall near West Gate shopping centre on the west rand. They stocked regular shoes in large and wide sizes. I'm sure there's something similar down south.

Just one comment, if I may: ailments not healing on the feet could be a consequence of poor blood circulation. This could be a result of obesity and/or early signs of diabetes. I would suggest seeing a doctor and highlighting those as possible concerns to check for and hopefully rule out.

Out of interest have you looked a Vivo barefoot? They can be pricey but I’ve worn them for so long now it’s pretty much all I can wear.

Funny you mention that - I've been looking at their shoes for a while now. Definitely going to get me a pair soon...how do you like it?

I am barefoot all the time. My heels was cracking as well. I did not know that it was due to me being barefoot. Then I discovered this:

Got a pair for work, gym and casual. Wear them everyday and they last longer than any tekkie I’ve ever had.

Funny thing, bought myself some airmaxes and a Nike Pegasus that I’ve donated to someone else coz cushioned soles make my feet incredibly tired and sore.

Can’t go back to wearing regular shoes.

Whenever I suffer from cracked heels, best solution I have found is to scrub heels vigorously before going to bed, apply good old vaseline (not any fancy shmancy cream costing 500 rands) to heels and wear this overnight. Within 3 days, you will notice a huge difference.

New Balance have extra wide sizes. Look for anything with 2E after the size. Try and find a factory Shop somewhere.
This! New Balance wide sizes are definitely the widest I’ve tried and are super comfortable too.

I also prefer walking barefoot or with flip flops so my feet have also ‘widened’.

The pain you’re experiencing could also be an ingrown toenail.

Unfortunately it isn't. Used to suffer with them as a child, but thankfully outgrew them...

Flippin' sore today after no pain before going to bed. Duvet and mattress, combined with moving in my sleep, has caused it to flare up again. Same thing yesterday morning after Sunday night.

Not sure how it's going to heal if this is reoccurring. Considering going for an X-ray to see what's going on.

Pleased to say that I cured myself after I was about to spend what, around R2,000, on a GP and radiologist visit. Probably R2,500 with a podiatrist too.

Two nights of sleeping lower down with my feet dangling off the end of the bed. Sorted.

Will use the money saved to buy two pairs of wide New Balance shoes.

Cool.

Wear shoes and socks for 6 months. No slops. And keep treating your dry skin.
