Widescreen LCD's

I just bought a Fujitsu Siemens 19" widescreen LCD from Makro today for R2500. Previously I had a regular 17" LCD which was nice but this one is a whole different story. Loaded up some episodes of Top Gear, Fifth Gear, 24 etc and the picture is awesome. Currently running at 1440x900 and all this extra Windows work space is rather nice.

Anyway just wanted to point out, for R2500 there aren't exactly eyee popping specials in the LCD front, unless maybe something with 2ms response, but when paying this price for 19" AND widescreen it's a bargain!

Note some sites mention DVI which isn't what I got. Included is the normal VGA (D-SUB) only.

I have a 20" ACD, and I have to agree, Widescreen is amazing. I dont understand why someone would go the old 4:3 route
 
Martmeister - sorry to sound harsh, but I would take it back. Reason is (and I checked this a few weeks back as soon as I heard about the specials on Fujitsue Siemens at Makro) they are meant to carry new stock only, the W19-1, which has DVI. The ones WITHOUT it are the old ones (C19-W1 IIRC) which are not as good as the W19-1 in a few ways, including the DVI input addition.

I also called Fujitsu SA to find out and they gave me the number of a few resellers (sell to public so no need to register or anything like that). What I found out was that a) you can get the W19-1 (with DVI) for around R2500-R2600 from any official FJ reseller. What's more: with the resellers you get the Fujitsu official 3 year warranty whereas through makro it is only 12 months, and with Makro only, not Fujitsu.

EDIT: or at least call Makro and ask about getting an exchange for the newer W19-1. When I enquired, I asked them about it and they ensured me it they would stock the new one, with DVI etc., and I went through and saw it myself and it was indeed the new one. I printed out the page from the website which you can see here and they looked into it and confirmed it.

Thing that puts me off widescreen is the lack of height in comparison to 4:3 models. It just looks so wrong for some reason...

Thats strange I got one from makro also and mine has the dvi and the vga port.
 
That is one reason I am only looking at 20.1" and larger, since you get so much more actual desktop space. A 19" widescreen has the same space as a 17" widescreen (1440x900 native IIRC) whereas the 20.1" has 1680x1050. So it may only have 5-6% more physical size, but around 35% more pixels!
 
Vio - yup, I checked with them too (didn't buy one at the end, going for a 20.1") and went to physically inspect one. As mentioned in my first post, if not a refund, at least demand an exchange for the newer one. Show them the printed specs from their website too.

Hi there,

Currently the only viable option is the Viewsonic VX2025WM. But even if there were more options I would lean toward that one as it is a fantastic screen - highly rated, good reviews, 3 year warranty etc.

Goes for around R4.5k?

Damn, I want one... Makes me sick checking out US prices, it goes for like $350 here. Less than R2500.
 
Well, if you do not mind getting one sans warranty, find Apoc and talk to him as he has the Dell 2007WFP (one of the best 20.1" widescreens available) for R3699. Otherwise I can get the Viewsonic for around R4250.
 
Price is wrong, trust me :) Been chatting with them for the past two weeks. That was the price of the last shipment. No stock of that. When new stock arrives (importer ETA 20 June) will be a lot higher. Estimated around R4500.

Speak to Artagra or Firesta at the Prophecy forums about it ;)
 
Why is the new shipment more expensive? wtf is going on?
 
It says it ships in 3 - 5 days. And I've managed to put in my basket, surely if I go through with the payment they're virtually obligated to deliver?
 
If so, bloody well done! I will do the same! But I have been PM-ing the owners of the shop because I had ordered one and they sent me a PM and email saying no more stock and new prices will be higher. But try, can't lose anything I guess :D
 
Well, I'd like to go thru with the order but I'm not, I can't spend money, I'm going backpacking in a few weeks.

But go ahead, if you've already decided on that monitor GO FOR IT!

An update!

update!...I have spoken to people at Makro and Siemens, both have confirmed that the latest they have are the ones without, stress WITHOUT DVI and are in black. These are the latest ones arriving from Germany apparently. Also Makro assure me that they have a 3 year manufacturer’s warranty. Any problems just take it back.

There is something else that is interesting, there is additional import tax on monitors greater than 19” (i.e. the 20.1” people are talking about) and widescreen and has DVI. So now they are just importing them without the DVI. If this is a new tax thing then that’s strange. Any one else know anything about this?
