I have almost always had fast and constant download and upload speeds with Telkom(yeah I was one of the lucky guys who had full speeds) but these past few days my DSL has been refusing to sync.

Last afternoon I got home and started up my router only to see the DSL light blinking...ON...OFF...ON...OFF...ON...OFF and not getting any sync. The light kept blinking slowly as if the DSL cable was unplugged (it wasn't:p). I picked up the phone to suffer through yet another 30 minute session listening to Telkoms ear-splitting music only to hear a static sort of noise. My first thoughts were that my cordless was faulty so I plugged in the spare handset and there was this loud static accompanying the dial tone with the occasional whining noise.

Today again the same thing happened but I just kept on pushing the button to hang up and after a few minutes the noise went and the DSL synced. BUT( cue Law and Order music) my router was syncing at some odd speeds like 507/623 or 507/407 and a whole bunch of other odd sync speeds. I thought the speed for 2meg lines to sync was 507/1280.

Another thing is that when I make a call the DSL loses sync. I have tried two different splitters(one is brand new) but that didn't seem to help. My gaming latency seems quite fine but with such bad download speeds gaming is quite...uh... erratic.

Stats for the router are:

Downstream Upstream
Hlin Scale 1165 0
Loop Attenuation(dB) 40.7 24.5
Signal Attenuation(dB) 40.7 25.7
SNR Margin(dB) 6.4 19.8
Attainable Rate(Kbps) 428 968
Output Power(dBm) 13.9 12.1

I know they area bad but before I would get a solid sync at 2meg with almost excellent line stats. Why would my line stats just drop suddenly.

BTW ADSL sync at the time was: 507/262

Sounds like your line is borked. I would get Telkom to send somebody to see what the problem is.

I have been experiencing irregular behaviour as well...one night I had to switch off the router for about 15 minutes to get to sync with ok'ish snr and line attenuation! currently getting a little over 1mb very unstable downloads on a 4mb line! Did a port reset at isp, looks like the next step would be to contact telkom! Also tested it with different isp's as well!

SNR and Attenuation are very bad.

Could be a exposed wire or a F up at the street box.

Unplug the pots filter and plug your router directly into the phone line; ensure that not fax or burglar alarms are plugged in Sounds like your POTS filter is broken or wrongly connected.

Also try power off modem and unplug adsl cable for 2 mins, reconnect, power on and see if it helps,

Tried doing what you said but it didn't help and the DSL didn't sync at all until I plugged it back in through the pots filter. I also noticed that when I plugged in the phone and DSL through the filter I heard a dedededed noise instead of a dial tone, reminded of a gun firing.

This afternoon it didn't sync until about 2pm and when it did I almost fell off my chair because the sync speed was almost normal 507/something above a 1000. The attenuation and SNR was also better:
Downstream Upstream
Hlin Scale 882 0
Loop Attenuation(dB) 42.6 24.5
Signal Attenuation(dB) 42.6 25.3
SNR Margin(dB) 6.3 14.3
Attainable Rate(Kbps) 1704 1016
Output Power(dBm) 16.0 2.9
