Hi guys, there was a thunderstorm 2 days ago which caused my internet to become very slow with lots of disconnects. A fault has been logged with Telkom already and they taking ages to come fix this. Anways... I noticed that when I make a phone call, my internet speeds up. It would go from syncing at 300kbps to full line speed then afterwards it would slowly degrade. I checked my equipment and everything seems fine. (ie. I changed the router, changed the filter and even changed the cables) I just want to know what could be causing this problem? (Fast internet when someone is on the phone and the complete opposite after the phone hangs up)

Solution: Phone Telkom 10210 and enjoy fast internet.

Ain't nobody ever gonna pick up, so happy browsing ;)

Line fault , when you pick up the phone you actually put a short across the line which balances the line if there is an imbalance that causes reflections , so when you put the phone down the imbalance (reflection) comes back.
Telkom call this metallic noise , you should see this on your SNR .

Thanks for the reply guys. I dialed 10210 and its working. Can I keep it dialing until the problem is fixed? lol

similar problem. except i lose sync.

waiting on telkom to come by.

If I leave the phone while it is dialing 10210 overnight, will I be surprised at the end of the month with a very expensive bill?

No, it's free and you will be disconnected at one point. (Only from Telkom line though)
