Tried installing an LG DVD writer on a pc, but it restarts the pc as soon as a put any type of dvd/cd into it. The restart happens as soon as the disk starts to spin, and will keep restarting until I elect the media. The pc had a cd writer which worked fine before, a 300 watt psu, 2 x hdd (1 x 60 and 1 x 80), and an old crappy gpu (gf 4600ti I think).

So far I've tried:
1. Updating firmware for drive and mobo
2. Trying the drive on both IDE cables as primary and slave
3. Trying all jumper 3 settings
4. Re installing both IDE controllers
5. Using only one hdd to see if it's a power issue
6. Shooting myself in the head.

Help a brother out!

First you need to change the system settings from restarting automatically when an error is detected. This may cause the pc to freeze instead. Also check your system log - it may provide more info on what the problem might be.

Just tried this and at first, it rebooted, but then on the POST, didn't read the disk. When I got into windows, I opened it and it worked. Tried another disk and it was back to the old problems :(

The log file looks like matrix code to me, so that was no help.

@viper - I had a cd writer which worked fine before, but I'll try all the other power connecters and see what happens. Keep those suggestions coming guys!

Tried PIO mode and it didn't help.

@ Saule - nice find there - lots of info, but unfortunatly non of it helped one bit. I think it has to come down to a faulty PSU, because 2 hdd's and an optical can't be pulling more than 300 watts. I'm off to blow my brains out now :(
