Hi Guys,

Just had my Telkom ADSL activated and for some reason I can’t connect to the internet from my laptop through wireless....However this problem has some strange twists that have me baffled. . .
My wife's laptop connects perfectly, enter the WAP and bam I can browse no problem.
My laptop, I add the network exactly the same way (we both on XP pro) and the ONLY thing I can connect to is Skype (MSN instantly says it can’t connect). I can’t browse, and I can’t even ping any servers in the command prompt. I know the wireless works on my laptop because I use it work and various other spots and works no problem.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance

can you ping your default gateway (router)?
Can you access the routers admin screen from your laptop?

You said you use the laptop at work (so im guessing its a work laptop), you sure that internet explorer is not setup to use a proxy (tools/internet options/connections/lan settings)

If you connect it via the ethernet port on the router does everything work fine?

maybe some Anti-virus blocking off some ports ??

Yeah it is my work laptop, but there is no proxy setup on it. I have connected to other wireless networks without a problem in the past.

I have just tried on my personal laptop and it works perfectly, I plug in my WAP key and bob's your uncle, no issues.

What really confuses me is that Skype connects, but nothing else. . .So freaking wierd!

is your proxy setting on auto?

Yeah my proxy settings are on auto....I have disabled kaspersky as i thought i could be blocking a port, but no luck.

Firefox wont solve this, I cant even ping outside servers....But can connect to Skype only, wtf.

Forgot to mention that i did plug my network cable in, and same story, only Skype conencts, cant browse, cant ping Nada.

Using any firewall?

switch off the auto proxy setting in ie
this looks like a ie problem
btw check if your windows firewall is on, turn it off for this test for that matter turn off all firewalls you may have
you must be able to ping lets say google after that
how do you know skype connects, can you im?

ok then it has nothing to do with the wireless if u getting the same issue when u plug it in.

Create a new profile in windows and login/test with that.

Also u should post the ipconfig output for both pcs.

FINALLY got it!

ok i did an ipconfig /all on the 2 machines and the only diff i noticed was the DNS. The 1 that is working had the router's DNS, and the 1 not working had no DNS. So i manually added the DNS and it works. . .

I would still love to know why on the 1 it works fine with auto settings, but the other i have to manually add the DNS server.

Anyway im glad its working, thanks for your help and input guys.

I think it is the DHCP (auto) option that needs to be enabled for the router to auto-assign (and the pc to "auto-accept") the gateway and DNS.

Ok still trying to get my head around this....Forgive my ignorance.

2 Laptops - both have 'Obtain DNS server address automatically' enabled, the 1 laptop connects to the wireless no problems at all, the other i have to manually enter my DNS server in for it to work, and then when i get to work, I have to set it back to Automatic in order for my work wireless to work.

If I do an IPCONFIG /ALL on both machines, the obvious shows that the 1 that’s not working has had no DNS assigned. But now what is preventing it from obtaining the DNS settings automatically.

Thanks for your help
