hey guys

i recently replaced the wifes pc with a lga 775 board and a 3.4 pentium D ... temperature when running cod4 is 72 degrees on the cpu ?:wtf:

her pc use to be amd 4400+ / ddr 400 / pcie 7600gs but the socket 939 mobo blew up (past its expiry date)

i read that 56 or 60 was acceptable for these chips. I havent checked the thermal paste as of yet because it was a bundle, everything was put together already and 2nd hand but i just could not resist to start it up to check how it handles games :)

what thermals do you guys recommend ? also the case is a bit tiny for my liking, the psu hangs over the cpu :erm: gonna replace that carp tomorrow morning.... gotta love a 2 year old pc grave yard ey

Get a Cooler Master Hyper TX3. Comes with thermal paste and should cost less than R200. Probably wont fit in that case though.

clean the paste,
reapply new paste,

what fans does the PC have?

If the case is too small it could affect the temps if not sufficient airflow.

Those CPUs run very hot at the best of times, so with a standard heat sink setup don't expect it to run cool.

Cooler the better, but most chips can handle up to ... well 90c. My current HTPC is in the same boat, running very hot, but I'm not too concerned as I stressed it over 100c before it rebooted..
Crazy you may think, but CPUs have protection built in. As for thermal paste, well I recommend any, as there is very little difference in temps. The seating and heatsink/fan is more important. Just make sure you clean the surface
properly and apply a tiny bit only. And most importantly the heat needs to sucked out somewhere in your case :)

believe it or not , its the first time theres a intel in this house (blasphemy) apart from the 200mhz pentium i owned while staying with my dad 12 years ago hahaha so this is all very new to me.
(i had to turn the sound off in diablo 2 for it to play without cpu lag, oh yeah good old days )

Yes it is a standard heatsink, uhhh those very flat ones that are round ? anyways the thing has been replaced into a bigger case and it seems to have helped a bit.

will have to start cleaning the paste off today and report on whats cooking or not:p

you always learn something new everyday.....

Got my E8400 up to 126 degrees at one stage, it just shut down my machine and I booted up like normal. Nothing ever happened to it.
