Wifi 6 vs older Mesh

Hi Guys.

I'm looking to upgrade my current wifi router. The debate is to get a single wifi 6 like the Huawei AX3 or a mesh system like the tp link deco e4 which still runs the older 802.11 ac. From my understanding wifi 6 allows for more devices connected and better range? While I guess the mesh system would help with rand as well

Pricing is similar. The main problem I'm trying to solve is having multiple devices using the network and the same time. And secondly range. The router is in the Centre of the house but that becomes a problem with rooms further away.

Any suggestions?

My Huawei AX3 (honor router 3) arrived in the week. R800 all inclusive from banggood. I have a B818 and the new router sets up a mesh with the existing router.
 
Much of the experience will be driven by 2.4 vs 5 ghz, which both tick the box on

Wifi 6 main benefit currently (imo) is if you need/want >gigabit speeds. Which in turn is largely tied to what kind of internet you've got.

I'd suggest avoiding a mesh device if possible. They're largely proprietary hacked together solutions that may or may not work great

Also worth noting that wifi 6E routers are coming soon. They're thin on the ground for now though

What's wrong with mesh?
 
I would do the same thing I have done at home over again if I was in the market now.
Ubiquiti Unifi's are fantastic, range is great, throughput is great and the controller works really well.
You just need to pop on a new AP and adopt it to the controller when you want to upgrade.

As a concept, nothing. And I've had good luck with mine.

...however as I said it's a roll of the dice. You're basically hoping that whatever the manufacturer cooked up is solid. Which is not at all a given judging by the crap that gets sold as home routers.

The other gotcha is that it effectively doubles the amount of bits congesting the air because everything gets sent twice.

[base router] <-> [mesh node] <-> [end device]

Meaning ideally you'd want a tri-band to keep the two on separate channels...which in turn boosts the costs.

Worth pointing out that most of the above is very much a OCD/theoretical case. In practice damn near anything will tick the box on "I just want to sit on my couch and watch netflix".

How is the range of the AX3 compared to the older router?
 
Check out amplifi hd mesh. Its superb and u dont need a separate router
