Wifi and Samsung Smart TV

I'm duly frustrated. Bought a new Samsung Smart TV yesterday, tried to connect to the Internet via the Wifi router. It connects to the Wifi, but not the Internet. On the TV screen is a message that I need a Smart DNS Proxy.

After trying all sorts of things I ended up calling Telkom this morning. The first guy stuttered so much when he finally got a word out, he had no idea what I was talking about.

Then had live chat with Samsung support - they say I need Telkom to open the DLNA ports on my router.

Surely this is way too complicated to be true? Telkom just informed me that I should buy a new router, that my router is outdated and I will have a lot more complications with speed, etc.

The other thing that bothers me is that with the Smart DNS Proxy the requirements are that you change your DNS settings. Telkom has the 10.0.0.2 DNS setting that works on my computer and everybody else merrily connects to the wifi with phones and iPads, etc. The moment I change that to the Unblock-Us DNS nobody can connect to the Internet.

I apologise if this was covered before, but I've now already spent 24 hours with this new TV that doesn't work properly and I'm getting a little edgy.

Mac OSX operating system
Uncapped whatever ADSL from Telkom
ADSL 5102 G Router - it's probably old, but it is working, so I don't necessarily want to buy a new one

If anyone wants to give advice, I'd be very happy.
Thanks

I had endless line speed issues with my 5102G router. Eventually replaced it with a Netgear N300, and issues were resolved.

Thanks, I was wondering what is a good router to replace with. I'm going to get one now.

No, I haven't, because the router is not in the same room. The Wifi connection is full bar, so I never thought of a cable. I have no ADSL access point in the room, so has to be Wifi. Samsung support suggested I use another device as a hotspot, which I also cannot commit to. The argument is that this is supposed to work and I would like to see it work with Wifi. Thank you for feedback.

What has DLNA got to do with you connecting to the internet?

Take your TV to the router, use an Ethernet cable and see if you have access to the internet?

I don't know what DLNA is, but that was the support person from Samsung's suggestion.

I cannot carry the TV, it's huge. I am going to try the Netgear router as soon as I can find a shop that has stock.

Thanks

DLNA is used within your local network where you can stream media from your phone or any other device to your TV. It has got absolutely nothing to do with the internet... It is like streaming music from your phone to your laptop via Bluetooth.

Secondly, I am not aware of a router where you can enable DLNA ports... All I know is that your TV waits for some signal, it doesn't care from where, but it must be on the same local network. This is not the problem that we are trying to fix, we can get to this later.

I would suggest you get some help to carry the TV to your router and connect it via an Ethernet cable, before your fork out R600 - R800 for a router.

I have gone looking for a router and/or ethernet cable. My ethernet cable is very old, I don't expect it to work. Anyway, I will post if I need more info. Thanks so much for your help.

In the meanwhile, IF I have to buy a new router, is this the right router to buy?

I'm just a bit scared to buy because the Netgear range is is foreign to me. The product description of the above router is "Netgear DGN2200 ADSL Modem Router" not just Netgear N300

Hi Jennie,

I use a D-Link 2750u.
Many of the members in the forum make use of this router. If ever you have a problem, then you have 98% of the forum helping you with problems related to this specific router. There is a D-Link representative on MyBB as well.

There are some members with the router that you have in question but I can't comment on that because I have no experience with it. I'm sure that Drifter can help you out with Netgear related queries if ever you decide to go for the Netgear router.

I would still suggest you get an Ethernet cable to test. Your problem might be related to something else.

I have this one. No problems with smart TV connecting and access to the internet. I recommend it as you can get a discount as a myBB member :)

You guys have been awesome. Thank you so much for all the help. I am going to go stick an ethernet cable into the TV and the router - something I haven't needed to do for quite some time now. I'm going offline will let you know. In the meanwhile, THANK YOU ALL.

I promise if I buy a new router, I'll buy from you Dan C. Thanks a stack.

Kernel is the one to speak to. PM him to find out about a discount. (If you are indeed wanting a new router)

Had the same issue and just set the DNS server to 8.8.8.8 and all was fixed :D also a manual ip obviously.

Gave up on using wifi on the Samsung smart tv in the office, ended up running a cable to it instead.
The wifi performance was dismal at best.
