Guys I am not too familiar with my topic of discussion, be that as it is, I would like some advice.

I currently have a laptop and modem (dongle). This is my means of getting onto the internet and it works fine for me.

I am with M-web as well and I am considering setting up a website. I see that if I get an ADSL line from Telkom and 3GB @ R79 from M-web, I will no longer be wireless or mobile, which is fine. I will be saving money.

My question is as follows, what would I need to purchase/set-up to have a WiFi spot (hope I am using the right terminology here) in my immediate environment so as my next door neighbour and myself can have access to the internet via my set-up?

Hope I am making sense.

you just need a WiFi Router with ADSL. you might get one for free from mweb, depends on which package you take or you could just buy one.
Very easy to setup.

Thanks for the info. What is the range like on a wifi router?
In metres, ball park figure.

Depends on where you put it, how powerful the antenna is, and how many walls are in-between. In my experience, the signal is good within a radius of 3-4 rooms.

It will normally say on the box, or the website. It depends on the type of antenna, transmit power, etc. And on the protocol being used. 802.11n has a much longer range than G or B for example.

I need it to reach about 35 metres and that would be through about 5 walls.
Would the antenna be part of the router or attached to it via cable and antenna placed on roof much like a tv antenna?

Please let me know which routers you are using, I don't even know a brand name, I would like to look up their specs.

You should be able to do that, but I can't say much about the speed, that also decreases the further away you are. Most basic home routers have the antenna(s) attached, they're about the size of a pen, and there are usually between 1 and 3. But you can just unscrew them and buy a bigger one if you want, especially for the more expensive routers. Some antennas can be fitted outside yes, and they're attatched with a cable. Those are quite expensive and used for long ranges. But the shops should be able to tell you more details about the specific product.

I recently solved this exact problem with a Wireless Range Extender. I have a wireless router et up in my office downstairs and I needed to get a good signal upstairs, more or less 40m away. Used to get nothing. Zilch. Zip. Bought the range extender for about R300 and Voila! FULL signal all the time! Bets money I have ever spent! PM me for the details on where to get it. I also bough a wireless modem from the same place for a great price.
