Sorry if I'm not describing this correctly.
I have my modem/router in 1 room and there's a cable from the back of this going into the roof to the other end of my house.
If I plug my laptop into this cable the internet works fine.
I want to use this cable to connect to something that will be able to generate a wifi signal so that I can use my tablet at the other end of the house also.
What's my cheapest option?

thanks for the suggestions.
Don't have an old router. Will check out the other suggestions.

have an old router laying around? convert it to an AP...-- I had the same issue...wifi would not cover the whole house....my solution was getting one of these : http://www.billion.com/product/home-networking/BiPAC2073R2-HomePlug-AV-200-Adapter.html ...cuts the hassles of cables....then setup my old router as an AP : http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/network-wifi/3494655/how-set-up-router-as-repeater/ net result , wifi all over the place...
^^ This.

I have a similar setup with a D-Link WAP in my office (external to the house) and a ZyXEL (http://shop.esquire.co.za/ProductDescription.aspx?id=2411005 - R299 excl) at the far side of the house. You just need an extra router/WAP if you already have a cable in place.

My WAPs are about 20m apart and give great coverage throughout the property, there's a thread here on MyBB somewhere detailing setting up the channels etc.
