Hi, I want to install a wireless network in my home and desperately need some help. I'm pretty clueless with networking, but did a lot of research on the internet - I'm just battling to get a coherent answer (also visited a two computer shops, to no avail).

Basic setup is a PC in study, with USB modem to connect to internet via Vodacom 3G.

Firstly, I want to setup a WLAN between pc and laptop. As I understand it I need a wireless access point and not a router? And then also PCI card for the pc (the Acer laptop has it built-in). Is any well-known brand like Netgear OK? Do I need the new (or soon to be) "n" standard? Then, in theory, I should be able to establish the WLAN.

Secondly, I want to access the internet from the laptop via the PC's USB 3G modem. I've read somewhere about only a proxy program being necessary - if you have an access point? A guy at one of the shops told me it is impossible to link via wireless through the PC's USB 3G modem - is it?

Thirdly, any advice on digital audio receivers would be appreciated. I want to wirelessly stream mp3's from my pc to my home stereo. There are a couple of products available, but i found very little comprehensive reviews to decide or fully understand the issues. Would really appreciate it if anyone can share their experiences with it - does it work well, are there always quirks with the wireless streaming, product suggestions etc. etc.

Thanks a lot!!!

Its not a easy procedure. but it can be done cheaply.

U only need a Wireless Network card for your Desktop PC (Then set it to Adhoc mode) <--- Its kinda like a Server/router mode
*remember to put WEP encryption on, and input a key of 10digits*

Your Laptop has wireless network card built in. U only let the laptop detect the wireless Desktop pc. Then connect and insert the 10digit WEP Encryption key.

All u then have to do is setup your internet and enable Internet Sharing

Thanks Napalm!

Do I understand correctly - I don't need a separate access point/router type piece of hardware, the PC does it (because there are only 2 machines in the network?).

Should I later introduce a third component e.g. the digital audio receiver, I would have to add an access point? Or am I completely missing the point?

Cheers

For 2 pc's u need only That both PC's have a Wireless network card in. One pc is configured as Adhoc, and the other simply connects to the adhoc *in adhoc mode it acts as a access point / router. But obviously it can only do one-way. It works kinda like a Crossover lan cable. Its one pc to one pc. No hub*

If u add another pc, u will need a Proper Access point.
