Hi..

I am new to adsl and wireless networking. I recently self installed Mega 100WR ADSL modem. No problems...am accessing internet (ethernet) and all appears to be well.
I want to connect a second computer which is about 10 -15metre away in the same room but separated by chipboard partitions. I have installed a wireless USB dongle to this second computer. An icon in the taskbar of my second computer states that the signal strength is good - excellent. BUT these 2 computers are not talking. That icon (2nd computer) also informs me that it is acquiring IP address. It goes on acquiring but no success. I cannot get onto the net from the second computer - the entire purpose to connect these computers.
I have not changed any settings on the main computer - nor do know what to change. Both computers are running Win XP - one Home the other Prof.
Please help. !!!

Regards

Hi..

The USB dongle says acquiring Network address nor IP address as i stated above.

Input would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi

Hi, depending on what router you have the ip of the router will differ try 192.168.1.200 or 10.0.0.2 for the telkom routers - type that into your browser - username admin - password administrator , then look for an enable dhcp option and click yes. This should automatically assign the other computer an ip.

Hope this helps.

RTFM, and google your problem, also read the other 100 threads on myadsl about this same issue.

You've setup something wrong, probably the router config has the DHCP server turned off, or the PC is Obtain IP business is not working... just configure the IP manually.

Okay I am going to try to be helpful

go to web browser (on direct connected pc-ethernet)
type 10.0.0.2 in the address
wait for the router login page
type in router password (username admin password:admin)
goto wireless tab
look on right hand side blue bar
click on set up
give ap a SSID(name)
Check that hidden is not selected.
click apply
click on security
either choose WEP or WPA(depending on which your USB key supports)
type in key
click apply
click restart AP

Then goto the pc with the wireless usb key and enter the information in it(WEP SSID etc)

had that problem too and for some reason whenever that happens I just change the password and it works again...
Probelly not the best answer or solution but hey it works for me :P

Hi ,

If i may comment.

I have heard of this issue before, although i have never been able to simulate it , so we are not able to fix it ...

BUT :

It seem, that under certian curcumstances ..... there is an problem with the issuing/acceptance of a second IP address on wifi systems. As I say, I have not managed to duplicate this issue, so I just offer a possible solution ....

Normally , the first issued IP address is 10.0.0.1 the second would be 10.0.0.2, but this is allocated to the router .... so the next one that you would expect to be allocated is 10.0.0.3 .....

now, I have heard it said that this is sometimes a problem , so :

Leave the routers IP at 10.0.0.2 , and change the DHCP server to start allocating at 10.0.0.3 ... and end at whatever value you wish , such as 10.0.0.100 etc .. .

This COULD solve your problem ...give it a try and let us know,

Hi..
Thanks for the input....problem still persists. My ADSL modem/wi fi router is telkom mega 100WR. Also using Telkoms wireless USB stick. Thought using telkoms products will make the connection a breeze.
The DHCP is enabled. WPA security enabled. Went through your check list Silver6933.
Changed the DHCP server to start at 10.0.0.3. (2C Telecoms). Did not interfere with the end value.

The read out on my second computer is complete : signal strength, speed, networkname -- except for acquiring.....

I might be wrong, but try to connect with the wireless without any security, just select "none" in the security option, and then save settings and restart your router.

Start from there and see if it connects then.. let me know

Have you tried phoning Telkom? The only benefit of using thier prescribed routers is that their helpdesk staff are trainded to assist you with them.

Otherwise just manually configure the IP address on the machine you're connecting with, something like:

IP: 10.0.0.5
Subnet: whatever it puts in
Gateway: 10.0.0.2

PriDNS: 10.0.0.2
SecDNS: 196.43.1.11

Hi and thanks to all....

Problem solved.
This is what helped.

I went into Services (run services.msc) - looked at all network related services. The following DHCP Client; Network Location awareness and TCP/IP Netbios Helper were running in manual mode. I changed these to start automatically - and restarted these services.

That corrected the problem. Both PCs are now friends.

Thanks once more to all

Sew

Ps I did phone telkom at 0800 375 375 - I was told their help is confined to ADSL problems does not cover networking

I have the same problem as Sew had (acquiring acquiring acquiring...), with a friend's Laptop. I turned off the Wireless Security like you suggested. Now the Laptop connects fine. I can ping&tracert the world, but not ONE webpage wants to open up. Suggestions? (I'll try Sew's solution as soon as I get that Laptop in my hands again)
