wifi hotspot security?

Hi,

Does anyone know how to add extra security to an Android Wifi hotspot? I'm using a Samsung GT-S5300 with Android 2.3.6 (Gingerbeard) as a wifi hotspot at home since Telkom doesn't offer ADSL in our area anymore and need to limit acces to my and my wife's laptops only. WPA can be cracked very easily and I can't see if someone has tried to crack it.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Dont forget that the range of a typical cellphone is very limited. It all depends on your type of neighbours and how far away they are Easier to change passwords occasionally.

Yes I'm aware of that but don't communicate much with my neighbors and don't feel like accusing any of them falsely. I'd rather just limited wifi access on the phone.

I have the phone already and can use it for more than just an AP, whereas I would need to carry an extra AP with me if I chose to use a standalone device.

Surely someone has run into this issue before?

WPA allows for 63 characters in the passphrase, use something complex and mix numbers and letters. Copy and paste and that should keep most people from trying to "hack" into your WIFI.

Doesn't it take a couple of GB before the WPA password can be cracked?

Use WPA2 with a long password (Normally a sentance instead of some 8 odd letter/number combo)
and you should be more than fine.

You most probably thinking WEP that is pretty easy to break.

a sentance is more secure than some arb crap, it needs to be easy to remember without the need to store it on paper or file on the PC.

I've somehow managed to "burn" through 16GB 3G traffic, for the month already and 10GB is normally more than enough at home since I do all my downloads at the office. I can't justify the usage so I'm trying to see if someone, or something is actually hogging or stealing the bandwidth. My laptop is clean (checked with Avast & Kaspersky) and I don't do much other than web based work from home. No downloads or video streaming, etc.

there is an app called wifi tether. i mite have the name wrong but its an app with a grey an yellow theme.

it allows you to authorise devices when they try to connect.
