How about one of these:

If I'm not mistaken one of the forum members has one so you could do a search and ask him what it's like.

Linksys make some wireless stuff that I've used with DSL as well, not sure if their products are available locally.

[:D]
Thats a nice product i must say built in adsl modem with a wireless switch.
but whats the range i wonder?
It looks like an indoor wifi switch cause most of the pics ive seen of the outdoor ones look like little military lunch boxes(able to withstand volcanic temparatures, fall from orbits, lightning strikes, meteor impacts)
also the price is about so thats R1099 without import tax.
I wonder who supplies it locally?

I think that Netgear is more like R3000 here. From what I've seen the range of this wireless stuff is not that great and signal gets blocked by walls easily.

You do get repeaters though that can help. Maybe stick a repeater near the window?

Hi Guys,

There is actually a MUCH earlier way to connect your two PC's!!
An important point though!
NB NB NB - You will need a CLEAR line of sight between the two houses! That means, NO Tree's, no buildings - NOTHING...
You should both be able to stand on your roof's and wave to each other!!!
You say you're about 100m away from each other! You will be wasting your time if you use routers, bridges,AP's etc(they will work but its really not necessasy) as its just the two of you!

Now, what you would need is the following for each side :
1 x Wireless network card (+-R450, has a range of up to 1.2KM-CAN be made alot further though with the right equipment)
1 x Pigtail (+-R110 - to connect wireless card to antennae)
1 x 8dBi Patch Antennae should do the trick(+-R200 - a pringle can will work but its not very reliable and will take a while to align properly - IF it works!!!)

If you want more people to join your lan you would need an bridge/AP(Access point) - and people can connect up to 25km away (Dont forget the line of sight though) - Access point's go for about R1400! There have even been instances of people connecting 41km apart with these specific AP's in the karoo...

Hope this helped....

Yeah and it's totally illegal if the signal crosses any form of official boundary such a road. It is of course entirely legal if it is used within a closed boundary such as a resdidential or office complex.... but I guess that's not ideal.

Yeah, suppose it is illegal - ICASA wont be happy... hopefully things will change though and we could have huge wireless lan party's! but suppose that wont happen anytime soon! Oh well....[B)]

Its not illegal(well i think it is most likely wrong) anymore if it crosses a road. and according to what i've read in most of the forums icasa is only gonna be on ure case if ure emmisions is too high. so no crappy antennas that leak like a blowup dart board.

well i found out yesterday of a wifi group in me neighbourhood so im gonna see if i can join up with them and build my own one cause these guys seem to use it just for gaming which is woooooooot

Just because it isn't being enforced doesn't mean it isn't illegal. As I understand it, establishing any kind of telecommuncations across a municiple boundary is illegal; eg. it's illegal to run CAT-5 over your garden wall. If you want to do that legally, you would have to pay Telkom to install a leased line of some kind. In fact, I think it's illegal just to run CAT-5 from one floor of an office building to another if they're owned by different companies / whatever.

Of course, if no-one knows about it, no-one is going to do anything about it...

If the previously disadvantage people can lay wires from the nearest substation so can we. The law in this country is up to crap so noting can happen to you.[:D]

Here is an idea. Why don’t Security complex get there own private networks on and then they can connect to each other. The complexes has it own switches witch connect to the core switch witch in turn connect to the Internet and to other complexes. Like a giant campus network, and if u move to the flat in the complex u have an option to use it for a fee.[:p]

I say Lets burn them

Does anybody know of a local company that actually sells 802.11 compatible Antenna's in the range of 15db and upwards ?

And who says that security companies haven't already pursued this? Your idea is not new, and has been pursued already - but there wouldn't be much 'security' if this was made publicly known and available, now would there?

I agree.

I would like to know if it would be legal if you get permission from Telkom. In other words, ask them if it would be okay if you setup a link to your friend's place through wireless.

Cheers

Nope - it would still be illegal, as Telkom have no mandate to issue authority for this to be provided by a 3rd party, as far as I'm aware. The only people who can do this is ICASA, so you would have to approach them for permission, stating clearly and motivating your case why you cannot make use of the services of the only two providers we have, viz. Telkom or Sentech, with full detail of the intended infrastructure...
