Hi all,

So we're sitting in a situation where we're sharing a DSTV decoder with our next door neighbor (I won't get into the details)

We basically need a way to change the change from our side but those conventional IR things you can buy won't have enough range to reach between the 2 houses. However they are able to see our Wifi from their side so I was thinking about using an IR blaster that connects to the Wifi and then using a phone app or something.

Has anyone tried using this approach and if so, can maybe point me in the right direction to finding this locally? I've seen a few online but I dunno how much effort it's going to be to get it shipped in.

Thanks in advance,
S1ght :)

I'm not entirely sure how they've got everything set up on their side but I think we're plugged into a SD PVR decoder that is already acting as a secondary decoder which then connects to a HD PVR decoder.

They then just have your standard aerial cable running across to our house. I'm not 100% familiar with the correct terminology for the cables here though so forgive me if I get those mixed up :)

I have done this.

I used my old eee-pc with ubuntu server and lirc .

I took two donor remotes apart for the infrared LEDs and connected them to the eee-pcs audio out as shown here.

With some Google I found the DSTV remote control lirc files.

I installed a webserver on the eeepc and wrote a little webpage showing the channels (daily scraper from the dstv online guide) and what is showing if you click on it the channel will change.

The result is I can hide my decoder behind the dry-wall and use my tablet/phone to change channels from any room.

That sounds pretty cool I won't lie :p

Thanks, will take a look.

If i understand your layout correctly, wont it just be easier to get your own dish (for the tv/audio signal) and use the cross boundary coax cable for the heart beat?

We could but that requires getting a dish :p Basically both houses belong to my room mate's dad as he used to use the 1 house for his office. Last year they moved the office across to their main house and then we moved into that house where they already had an aerial cable going from 1 house to the other. Am I correct in thinking that the cable itself can be used for the heart beat, we'd just have to replace the end bits so that they can plug into the decoders?

Sorry but could you please clarify this a lil'? From the looks of it, would I just be able to plug this between the aerial and tv on my side and it'll be able to send the signal to the decoder? Cause if so then that would actually be perfect :D
you put the tv link where you sit, so that it can see your remote[dstv remote]
then just tell the decoder about the tv link.
