Hi everyone
My wifi signal not strong enough to establish a encrypted connection, any other way I can restrict people access my network and use my internet?
I am using a router to connection to GWI's basestation.

Sorry for being so blunt, but who told you that rubbish ?

told by the GWI contracted installation people. Saw in my wireless router setup, site survey-> the base station I connect to has no encryption and signal 13% (but speed ok, stability seems fine for now). So how can I setup WEP/WPA? do I need to ask GWI for their passkeys or something?

WISP providers dont usually use encryption. they use MAC locks. your data is "free as a bird". One way to secure the link is ask GWI for a PPTP connection to the server and then you do a VPN session over the wireless to that server.

If you do a 'Site Survey' and the software says "No Encryption" .. then there is really no way of adding WEP/WPA/PSK encryption without changing the settings at the tower...

The Router will not accept outside connections in Client mode... but to be safe, add a firewall rule that says "Deny all incoming, allow all outgoing"

But seriously.. that installer doesknt know what he is talking about.

so it means that tower has no encryption for the connection? And you mean with MAC lock people with different mac add won't be able to use my account? And there is no way I can protect my connection currently from other people's access??
PM Chris from GWI on this forum to ask for solution and sent email to their support already.

Their installation people is bad I know, they were told to come by my house and do signal test, but they rather do it outside on the street with all the houses and trees blocking them and past by won't even bother to come in and do test.

Zacree :-)

MAC locks work, *BUT* mac spoofing is very easy (just to throw a spanner in the works)

Is there any other authenticaion systems used ? user/password? nothing?

Yes my router is running at client mode.
But firewall only have IP/MAC/PORT filtering and DMZ....
Supper time, Thanks for your help and will be back in 30 minutes time....

yes mac spoofing......
will be back soon

there is no mac access list on the gwi towers!

well its not my access point so its not my problem

If there is a user/password, then I suspect its a VPN. That data is encrypted so no need to panic at all.

Called support today and told me because it's PPPoE it's safe......
Username/password like normal dialup and ADSL...

well is it?
there is no encryption on these pppoe settings, thats how its setup

GWI uses encrypted PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) connections, so no wireless encryption is needed...

Hi Chris, Dannie didn't call me on Sat to confirm time on Monday, hope he remembers to call me on Monday.....
