Ok so the pta joburg sardine run has become a bit much and I'm moving in next door to my office! I'm still trying to figure out what I'm going to do with the extra 10 hours I'll have every week

Now since I'll be living so close I might as well connect to the office lan via wifi, I'm not even crossing a road so it may even be legal not that I would care too much. Currently the office doesn't have a wifi network, but they're quite happy to let me install one.

The only thing is they want the rest of the office to use it too which means it will have to be kinda central in the office.

So, my apartment is about 100m from the office, without line of sight though (one corner wall blocking, a 2m high pole wouls sort that though), and I'd like to be able to use my laptop which can't take an extra antenna so what are my options?

I've heard of a wifi repeater with a yagi aerial should do the job, but I can't find too much info so I'd really appreciate the help.

Thanks,

Patrick

Hi

You can set up the Ap at the office in Ap mode and then the Ap at your house in Bridge mode, I would recommend getting a Linksys WRT54GL router and just reflashing it with a compatible firmware to allow for this (I don't think the standard firmware has a bridge mode) you will also be able to set it to only use one of the antennae ports.

Make sure that you get a version of Linksys Ap that is compatible as the new version 5 WRT54G cannot be reflashed as it is not running Linux.

Have a look at linksysinfo.org for more info on how to do this

patrick - one will be surprised with the distance of wifi in it's unmodified state.

put in a wrt54gl and see how far away you can connect to it.

maybe an AP in your house in a good spot can connect to the one in your office.
not sure if bandwidth is an issue but remember that adhoc or WDS mode has less bandwidth.

I have a unmodified WRT54 with wich I share my internet connection with a neigbor about 20m through walls without a problem.... just get a decent pci wifi card with a removeable atenna it should save you some money...

Thanks for the info guys.

Where can I get WRT54's at a decent price. I'll buy one for the office first, then walk around with my pda to see how far it goes. Interestingly enough my pda has better reception than my laptop! If I cant get a signal then it looks like what you're saying is buy another WRT54 to connect to the first right? And if that fails do I buy my WRT54 an antenna or do I buy the one in the office the antenna?
