Hi guys.

Wonder if anyone can help me. I see that Telkom have Wifi USB adapters for sale for R299. If I have a PC that's connected to the internet, can I share that internet connection with my laptop in another room if my Desktop PC (that's connected to the internet) and my laptop both have a Wifi USB adapter?

And if it is possible, how difficult is it to set up?

Thanks guys.

Firstly, DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM TELKOM UNLESS UR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT. U should be able to get something similar or even better for the same price somewhere else. For example you can get a Netgear USB Wi-Fi adapter here: http://www.digitalplanet.co.za/shop/product.asp?stockID=59840 (Aparently somewhere on 5fm's website you can also get a 8% discount voucher for Digital Planet)

Yes it is possible, but not always that easy, best would be to get a wireless Router that handles your internet connection.

Just two questions: 1) what type of internet connection do you have.
2) How does it connect to your computer? (USB, Ethernet?)

Hi, don't worry. Telkom will not get the sale. Just saw it in a little advert.

I have a Wireless Internet connection(Wireless Online). The way I understand it there a router on the roof with the antenna then it goes to a little box thingy with a power adapter wich then get connected to my computers onboard network card.

Hope it make sense.

Ok, this might be a bit confusing, maybe some one else could come up with better ideas and ways of explaining it. But this is how i see it: 1) you could just get the two USB Wi-Fi adapters and create a network bridge on your desktop, or 2) you could try and get a wireless access point with atleast two LAN ports and connect your cable that comes from the roof and your desktop into that and have you notebook connect to it through wi-fi. Or you could have your desktop also connect through wi-fi, but its not necessary and will cost more for the extra adapter.

The advantage of going with option 2 is that if your desktop is not on, your notebook will still be able to access the internet.

Just another question, how is your IP address on your desktop configured? Is it manually set or automatic?

Mmm... i reakon the best would be to find out from your ISP what would work and what wouldnt, cos i was counting of the fact that your computers IP address is asigned by their router. You could proberly just set all the computer's IP addresses manualy, but just make sure from them first.

Otherwise i bet here's some one else on this forum that knows quite a bit more about this stuff, and might be able to help you.

Just to make sure, the IP and DNS settings your talking about is the settings you set on your computer in your Local Area Connection Properties in the Network Connections folder, right?

get a Prog called WinProxy, it works pretty well, doesn't change any IP's as far as i know. it creates a Proxy server(hint the name) just configure ur browser to use the PC that's connected's name and port, by default it's 8080 I think.
As for the wireless i'm not sure.

Wont it just be the same setting as a direct-cable network?
Share ur local connection1(Wireless internet) with other user, then with the local connection2(wireless adapter) set local Ip addresses.
Think thats how my friend got his to work, although he was on ADSL.
Otherwise use proxy program...but that can be complicated when u want to use ports besides HTTP
Just my 2cents:p

by the way, local IP address: 192.168.0.1 for ur pc with internet.
192.168.0.2 for ur laptop...under the network u setup with ur wireless adapter
And set ur DNS same as the IP for ur pc with internet.
Its all under TCP/IP under local connection 2

Hope this helps...
