Has anyone on here tried this?

I have made a few attempts and have got my N82 to see the network I set up but I get a gateway error when trying to browse.

What is this Ad-Hoc thing, and why do I need it?

If you have a wired internet connection at home or in the work place, like a DSL or ADSL or the old dial-up connection, without a wireless router, and you are dying to have this connection converted somehow to a wireless connection that you can use on your WiFi enabled device, than this is your solution. It will take your wired connection on the computer and transform it to a wireless connection, that will then be used by your device to connect to the web.

What do I need?

In order to perform this, you will need a computer with Windows XP or Vista on (I will only detail the XP side, as this is what I am using now, for Vista you can check the link above). This PC needs to be WiFi enabled, meaning most new laptops will work. If it doesn’t you can always get a wireless USB dongle, though getting a router by itself might be a smarter solution. You also need a device with support for WLAN, or WiFi if you want, this includes the N95 series, the N82, N91 and N93, N81 and many Eseries.

You also need 1 to 5 minutes of free time to make it work, depends on how fast you are with your computer.

The rest can be read here : http://www.symbian-guru.com/welcome/2008/03/convert-your-xp-connection-to-wifi-for-your-symbian.html

I've used it before on my N80. But it's sometimes a bitch to set up dude... eventually I stopped using wifi on my Symbian altogether.

I don't seem to have much issue with wifi on the Nokia as it finds other networks in my area no problem... it is just getting the laptop to "transmit" the ADSL signal that seems to be an issue. Obviously missing some step. But I see from comments on those web pages that others have also had the same problems.

I did it between my laptop and my home pc some time ago, and if I remember correctly I had to acually specify the ad hoc network name on both machines. Then I just set up internet connection sharing on the machine connected to the net.

I still have good a article on it somewhere so if you want I can go scratch at home.

That'll be good Vero, thanks.

There is a smiler software for WM,
PM me for details.

I've done it with 2 laptops and a 3G/HSDPA connections via Huawei E220.

I browsed through some of the articles mentioned and don't see any mention of ip addresses.

Steps I followed:
  1. Share connection that is currently connected to the internet.
  2. Set up ad-hoc network on the same laptop/pc with:
    • IP = 192.168.0.1
    • Subnet = 255.255.255.0
    • Gateway = IP of internet connection
    • DNS servers = DNS servers of internet connection
  3. On the device connecting to the ad-hoc network:
    • IP = 192.168.0.2
    • Subnet = 255.255.255.0
    • Gateway = 192.168.0.1
    • DNS servers = same as internet connection
  4. SSID = whatever (must be same on both devices)
  5. Same security on both eg. WEP
