Nintendo is hoping to cash in further on the console's success with a new accessory meant to help get people into shape.

Japanese electronics company Nintendo reinvented videogaming with its Wii console, which has far outsold rival systems from Microsoft and Sony.

Now Nintendo is hoping to cash in further on the console's success with a new accessory meant to help get people into shape.

The Wii Fit, which retails at R999, is essentially a pressure-sensitive platform, about twice the size of a bathroom scale, which is placed in front of a television screen. This "balance board", which connects wirelessly to a Wii console, senses weight and shifts in balance in any direction, and moving around changes what happens on-screen. This, when coupled with on-screen games, provide different types of exercise. There are four training categories, namely aerobic exercises, muscle work-outs, yoga and balance games. There are more than 40 separate activities, including a ski jump, press-ups and Hula Hoops.

Those expecting the Wii Fit to help give them a proper work-out will be disappointed. Journalists assembled for the product's launch in Sandton last week barely worked up a sweat. The Wii Fit is no substitute for a session at the gym or a run around the block.

Those who didn't quickly tire of the Wii's interactive sports games - I did and went back to my PlayStation 3 - might find it entertaining.
