I just am Curious. I have connected my sis in laws wii to the net but does not look like you can do much here.

Main reason was hoping for online play and having the opera browser but you need the shop for the browser but when you go to wii connect in the settings it tells you the shop and forcast channel is not avaible. now how do I go about actually putting Opera at least on the Wii so that there can be internet access through it at least.

I saw something about hombrew or something like that but not to clued up on the consoles side. only succeded with PS3 and the Xbox now it is just the wii I would like to get this right with.

Your help would be gladly appreciated

hi labratza

I have just done this on my nephews wii... the biggest problem was the initial region setting... although we live in South Africa... we cannot actually set the wii region to this as it excludes us from such things as the internet channel and opera.

So... firstly set your region to something other than South Africa... I have set the nephew's to United Kingdom.

You then need to select yes to wanting to use wii connect and the shopping channel.
Now you need to agree to the terms and conditions.
You will then have the wii return to the menu.
Now you can select the wii shopping channel and add the internet channel.
It will then download and install the Opera browser... it takes a while... a mario character will run across the screen and eventually the annoying sound will indicate it has completed.

Voila... you have the internet on the wii.

Because of the region change, your weather channel and other region-bound services will be unavailable for South Africa... but at least you will have internet access.

I hope this helps.

:)

I will try it tonight. that does not mean that I can not use the games that we buy here in south africa? I can still play those on there? and it does not only have certain amount of times that you can change it?

Where can I go to set the Region up please assist me here lol don't wanna look like a dumbass when doing it :P

thanks a mil kilobitsperyear

Hi again

No prob...

You will need to click on the wii settings spanner... then you need to click through the wii settings until you see the language, country screen. Here is where I changed it to UK.

I do not think it affects your game playing as in the Playstation... (I could be wrong though)... this is a region setting for online services... not a region setting for DVD region permissions. I sldo think you can set it as many times as you need to... there is no warning about number of times left etc... I have changed it at least three times this week and it still is OK.

My nephew's locally purchased wii games are still working OK with the new UK region setting.

As said before... I don't think it is the same as a PC's DVD player region change.

The only other thing I had to do was fiddle with the MTU settings on the wii... and found that a setting of 1392 worked best for me. It is using the onboard wii WIFI adapter and connecting to a wireless router / ADSL connection here.

Any how... here is a link that may help...

one more error. It says it can not connect to server. do I need to have the latest system firmware for this or not?

Reason I have not updated the firmare is because our internet connection at home keeps dropping and do not want it to drop while it is updating the firmware. Do you know if it downloads the file first then updates or how does it do the update?
