WTF?

Normal Price: R 3,334
Special: R 3,215

That's R400 less than the Xbox360? Conversion of the price from the pound and the euro should put the price around R2300/R2400.

Euro and Pound pricing taken from http://www.nintendo.co.za/NEWS.asp

If they do this, they will be competing directly with the 360, which is pretty much marketing suicide.

I seriously hope that this is just Take2 being greedy and nintendo will release the Wii at a reasonable price through it's website.

Bah!

I'm pretty certain that's Take 2 imports. They did the same for the 360 which came in around R4700.

Futronics reckons they're coming in somewhere between R2000 and R2800.

That's good news.

The avaiable date on Take2 is the 8th of December which is the same day the Wii is released in Europe (and South Africa).

Why would Take2 import something that's locally available?

strange.

When you read the take2 forums there are doubts if the wii will be released in South Africa the way futronic is carrying on.

Can I have the 30 second lowdown on what the issue is?

From nintendo:

Wii Launch information
Wii is set to revolutionise the face of gaming when it launches in Europe on 8th December 2006 (South Africa shortly thereafter.) At an estimated retail price of 249 Euros (ÂŁ179 in the UK), bundled with Wii Sports.

futronic have every intention of launching the Wii locally, I have very little doubt that we won't get it. The problem is international demand and priority.

While Nintendo SA is recognized by Nintendo global, we're a bit of an ugly step daughter. We may not get stock till Europe has had it's share. It happened with the DS lite launch, we got it a month later, although they were very good with the gamecube launch. (I think it was within a week)

The pricing is unknown, probably because it's exactly that. They probably haven't received their allocations yet, so they can't pay for them, so they don't know how much it's going to cost.

Thanks doobiwan.

Nintendo's marketing department should be shot. (if they even exist)

I bet if you ask 10 people, only one would know what a Wii is.

I get the impression it's very much a sub-department of a sub-department. Speaking to their contact guy, he really wants to drive the brand, but I don't think he's getting the support he needs.

Any idea's on how to help out?

Hey Doobiwan, do you know who to speak to with regards to the advertising and marketing of the console? I've got a pretty innovative method to get the word out.
Could you PM it to me please?

Unfortunately the market is fickle, it's all about pricing.

If the Wii pricing gets to close to the Xbox360, it will be in direct competition and will get slaughtered. It can't be sold to cheaply as the guys bringing it into the country need to make sufficient margin on the console to cover their return on investment.

It's a fine balancing act on making it cheap enough that more consoles are sold and making enough money per unit so that it's worth their while. If it's too expensive nobody will buy it. It needs to get to the point where somebody can look at a PS3 and think "wow, I could get a XBox360 and a Wii for this price"

Don't know enough about marketing to suggest a way of getting Wii involved in SA popular culture. (Minki and a vibrating controller maybe? :P)

Johnny, the Wii isn't about specs... it's only a little more powerful than the original Xbox. The gameplay on Wii is probably more fun than on any other console (given the right title, of course).

I'm always tempted by bundles. Package deals where I can choose a game or two, and get a memory for less than I'd pay if I bought the items individually. I think it is also worthwhile giving video outlets an incentive to stock and rent the games. I'm more inclined to consider a console where I can rent the games, especially if you're dealing with children.

Yeah take note

Whats the specs of this console compared to a P/S3 and xb360? I havent even heard of a wii until now :/

And here's proof that specs mean little - a report on the most powerful of the lot:

Wii's strength reportedly is it's playability - something developers have forgotten about of late (lost sometime after the nintendo 8 bit IMO. Reason I suggest that is I can't remember when last I spent a few hours playing something as simple as Super Mario or Islander 1-3)
