So it turns out Nintendo did investigate camera motion tracking technology for the Wii but opted not to use it because they got better results with accelerometers. Don’t know how long that experience will hold water with demonstrations of the Xbox 360 NATAL technology seriously impressing. The complexity of movement tracked by the NATAL system is seriously impressive and it could well be the market killer for the Wii. Nintendo better hope their MotionPlus upgrade to the current motion detecting apparatus gives customers more than the NATAL can.
Project NATAL offers integrated motion tracking of every aspect of body movement and also responds to voice commands. When it comes out in 2010 it will rock the console industry and will put the race for poll position back on track again. I seriously foresee some serious sales issues for the Nintendo Wii if they don’t come up with an answer. Motion control in the Wii has been its strong selling point beyond the clear performance and detailed graphics advantages of the Xbox 360 and the Sony PlayStation 3. The Sony guys also announced a system in development simply called the “Playstation Motion Controller” that’s got camera based motion tracking but with a wand that’s also heavily praised after it’s demonstration.
The games demonstrated in the Project NATAL demo are quite astounding. There is a possibility of overweight gamers around the world (including myself) actually getting into shape within the next 12 to 18 months with these technologies.
