That has been my interpretation as well, wikileaks just confirmed what many of us knew already. I don't get why they are such a hype.

Maybe, but they aren't doing much more than the local news papers or journalists. It is once again a typical American paranoia thing
Up to now, they confirmed that old Bob is a mad man - wow I didn't expect that

Afghanistan is a war zone and that civilians got killed - now who would have thought that civilians might get in the cross fire in a warzone.
The Middle-east is gatvol for Iran and that China is gatvol for Korea - now what a surprise...

yeah, problem is, a large majority know nothing of what goes on behind the scenes in governments and only when we reach critical mass will we able to do something about it..
I assume the same large majority don't read the news either

The Ministry of International Relations has said that Wikileaks will not be blocked in SA. I know Ministers aren't exactly known for their propensity to keep promises, but still... The problems with Wikileaks so far have got nothing to do with our government. 
In any case, you can't block what's already been mirrored across half the internet.
Yes, I know what you mean... 90% of it isn't exactly revelatory stuff. One thing is for sure: Do not trust the mainstream media's summaries of the leaks... Spiegel, Guardian, Le Monde, NY Times etc tend to be more worried about silly, superficially embarrasing gaffs by ministers and diplomats.
The important stuff is glossed over.
What's more, just because a diplomat said something, it doesn't mean that it's true. These people aren't exactly appointed based on merit... In most governments, an ambassador's job is a good way of banishing someone who might prove politically embarrasing and/or deletarious to one's own ambitions if they were kept on the domestic political scene. When you're dealing with secret 'diplomatic cables' from America, you shouldn't be surprised if you come into contact with a Sarah Palin worldview...

So if the mainstream media is responsible for prettying up wikileaks then why the big hype? The person who is supposedly uninformed will still be uninformed. At the moment the media is using this as a sensationalism I bet America is laughing at the big fiasco, currently they are exposed as not being so two faced after all, it is quite good for their public image.

The media wants to sell papers. They could care less about "informing" people if people would prefer to read something less offensive to their worldview.
"America" isn't laughing because "America" isn't a person. If you're a politician and you got bummed by this, you're not exactly laughing. If you're a nameless civil servant who actually runs things while the politicians are out campaigning, well, you could probably care less.
It's not generating a backlash against the institution that is America. The backlash is against Wikileaks.
This is it. But for how much longer?
